Tune help and questions? built engine power
Tune help and questions? built engine power
OK, so I was tuned about 1.5 years ago, and made 423HP/377TQ. That was on the 850cc injectors and stock fuel pump on 93 pump.
about 6 months ago i bent a rod (not a tune issue) and I had my whole motor rebuilt with pistons, rods, bearings, valve springs, seats and retainers. I also had a stage 3+ clutch installed.
So Even before my motor got rebuilt my wideband shows low 10's and sometimes even 9's so I know im running rich as hell. There is usually a layer of gas on the back of my car I have to clean off every car wash.
Needless to say, since I also now have a built motor, I figure more power could be extracted from my car?
So I am going to setup a retune at IVEY TUNE and figured, if I am going to get retuned, I should get everything done.
so my qestions are as follows:
1.) should I just get retuned on 93, with everything I have now, and if so what kind of extra power might I see? I know I can rev a little higher, and more tq can be had since the rods can handle it now, so could I expect maybe 25HP/TQ through the whole power band?
2.) I am on 850cc DW injectors and stock fuel pump, Sean, says I should be OK if I just get retuned, but would adding a bigger pump and or injectors net more safety or more power? say 1100's and a DW300.
3.) If I decided to go with an e85 tune also, what kind of pump and injectors should I be looking at for 500whp?
I would prefer to go the tephra mod route, and not the AP, is there and negatives by going this route and running a pump and e85 tune?

having a built motor doesn't mean you get more power.. it just means you are able to make more power (mods, fuel) safely.
if you have easy access to E85 I would make that your primary tune, and have the 93oct tune as just a backup - in case you run out..
e85 normally adds about another 50kw (70hp), you would want to look at 1000cc+ (fic1100), and pump i would be going with walbro e85 400, the dw301 is ok as well...
get cams as well 214b's or s2's...

Thanks. I know having a built motor allows a little mroe boost to be used, and more timing, and more torque can be had since the rods can handle it, and that affords more HP and what not.
Thats kind of what I am asking, is it enough of a reason to go get my car retuned? I decided to stick to pump 93 only. So its just going to be a retune, with my exact mods now with maybe a slight rev limiter increase.
Do you think 850cc injectors and the stock fuel pump would be fine for this, i should I maybe invest in a wal 255 pump and or a bigger injectors?

The thing is tho, at that point, I guess I would need to upgrade my Fuel pump, and I would also need to upgrade my injectors, and I would also need to have 2 tunes, and my tuner prefers to use a cobb AP, im not really comfortable installing injectors and a fuel pump thats not drop in, so theres some change too. so im just adding up the money and im like:
retune - 295
maybe a wally drop in pump 129
or
1100 injectors 450
E85 fuel pump and install/wiring 300
COBB AP 400
Retune 295
1450
Not even including install fees.
I know I can sell off my stock pump and 850 injectors for some change, but still tahts a decent chunk of change.
Also I dont want cams, and if oyu add that into the mix its even more.
Is it really worth it? Dont get me wrong having an extra 70HP on tap would be nice and fun, but on the other end of that coin I wonder how much trouble its worth.
Also I guess my weak point is my FP green, probably shoulda got a red from the beginning and would have been better off for more power after a rebuild.
My evo is already fun, and I guess I am growing up, and maybe in a year or 2 will sell it anyway for something a lot slower and more luxurious. I guess it wouldnt be such a bad thing to have a lot of fun with it until then, but im afraid with huge power or what not, I am just pushing hte car, and dont want to go through another engine rebuild, and it seems like people with E85 pop their engines left and right no?
Yea, I really am at a cross road, not sure which path to take.
OK so if I dont need an AP, I guess that makes it 1000 instead, and I guess thats not a big deal.
I need a pump that can handle both E85 and Pump. reading the wal 400's are not safe with pump?
I am probably going to be 450ish on pump and 500+ on E85 on a dyno jet, so what pump should I be looking at?
any negative of going with a double pumper?
I would need 1100cc injectors too right?

dont go dbl pumper.
get an E85 walbro 400 + fitting kit from MAP.
I am not sure if MAP do the wiring harness for the new E85 pump, but I just cut that huge connector and repinned the regular wiring harness... nice and easy.. just drill out the return venturi to 2.5mm and you will be fine on 40ish psi fuel pressure...
FIC1100's are the go, or the ID1000's (whatever is cheapest)
also get your blue/green fuel pump relay done (if it hasn't already)
and then find a good tuner... - this is the most important bit of all

would there be any reason not to go with these?

I will say I recently chose the less expensive of your two routes, but that is more due to e85 becoming less available in my area and getting more into motorcycle racing.
That said - if your tune is off, you definitely need a retune. There isn't any question about that. Don't go blowing up another motor or wearing out your rings.
If you are already running rich you may not *need* a new pump - but it might not be a bad idea - I'm not sure the stock pump gets overrun on 850s. If you go 1100cc you should definitely get a new pump and rewire just to do things right and be done with it. Either way as tephra said the FP relay is a good idea and a good tuner is a must.
------
Finally a note on the built motor - it may allow for more boost, but only because you have a higher safety margin (or are willing to decrease your safety margin). It may allow for more timing, but only because you have changed the flow of the head (porting/cams). It may allow for more torque, but if Ryan gates can run 11,000 track miles at the power level he was running on his first stock motor - you aren't there yet (unless you have a bad detonation event).
That last point it paramount. A built motor only allows you a higher margin of error (but does not eliminate it) until you get to very high / near insane power levels.
The *only* place you really might gain some power if flow is not changed is from lighter pistons and rods, but that is unlikely to produce much more than a couple of horsepower.

thanks, yea, im not buying those, but I am looking for a set of FIC 1100's and a Walboro E85 pump. My tuner is Sean Ivey, and he tuned my evo the first time, and it seems like a really solid tune. I will be calling him today to confirm if he can tune me without an AP. We have been emailing back and forth and he said for duel tunes he does prefer the AP, but I would prefer to use your mod as it saves me some moola.
I will read into it more, but if you dont mind me asking what button do you press to switch between tunes, and what light on the dash tells you which tune your in?
EDIT: didnt see the last post, but yea, I figure the retune might net me a little more power. I also lost my launch limiter, so I need that fixed, and fixing the richness will help I think. I wasnt expecting anything huge. I agree with the safety margin, and I dont want to pop an engine, so I am going to make sure that sean tunes me extremely safe. I think the E85 will be nice, because Ill get the power bump from that, but also keep it safe. I assume I would be 500whp on my DD and thats not bad, and hopefully pretty safe and reliable. 425+ on pump gas isnt half bad either.
