help with tuning, i went from motec m800 to original ecu
Hey guys I’m new here, I only recently bought an evo x GSR 5sp and got into the world of evos
So my problem’s... and so far solution’s...
After driving my evo for a few weeks, on wot I would get ignition cut with a flashing check engine light, didn't know anything about the history of the car so I dived in and found a headache of a setup.
I have a scan tool called launch x431 which is handy for many different cars, so I started scanning the obd bus and found that I could access every module but the ecu..Strange huh?
The etacs module was reporting u0001 can communication failure with other module’s so I felt there was something wrong with the ecu. Then, when I removed the ecu, I find that it isn’t the stock OEM Mitsubishi ecu but a motec m800... fml!
Google lead me to realize if I wanted to access this ecu I would need an “utc” usb2canbus from motec… I have dyno sheets showing the car previously made 200kw/268hp at the wheels with this motec ecu but it feels extremely unstable “bad tune” not to mention it doesn't want to communicate via the can-bus with other modules.
So from searching your forum and reading multiple posts "thanks guys for all the information here.. Honestly really valuable" I felt that I could get a standard ecu from an evo x and install it, removing the PnP motec m800.
So today I bought an evo x mr "sst" ecu and installed it., lucky for me my launch x431 obd tool allows me to push the vin from the wireless kos to the ecu and that resolved my immobilizer problem and now my ecu shows my old vin and my current vin
, however I now had a check engine light showing its looking for an sst when my evo x is a 5 speed gsr.
So then I searched around this forum again and found a link with stock roms, downloaded one with a similar first 4 digit jdm manual rom and flashed it… I just happened to be in luck because I had the openport2 and a pcmflash powerbox which I use for dsg flashing on Audi’s, just had to download ecuflash and the rom J car now starts and no check engine / looking for SST transmissions on the can bus…. Success
But here’s the thing, my car is not standard. I have the following mods, 3in all the way with dump, grimmspeed boost solenoid, cold air intake with upgraded intercooler piping, etc.. so while the jdm rom is ok.. It’s a standard map.. I was originally looking for some fq roms or a rom that would work with my mods…
Now before you ask why jdm.. Well I’m in Australia and no one has an adm rom, but from googling the software number I think we share the same rom’s as edm and a lot of our cars are imported from Japan..Being so close to japan “same time zone woot” and we have 98octain .. well RON.. as standard.. Sorry Cali 93
So I started looking for custom roms or roms I could mess with.. given that my Mitsubishi experience is limited to today only lol, I use to tune Honda’s b/d series in crome years ago so I have some limited tuning knowledge..
Some posts I found are referring to using gunzo’s roms as a basemap to start.. But I can’t seem to locate the original posts anywhere or any links. I was also looking at having someone tune it for me and I just send logs. There was a post showing boosttuning.com is a good place to go.. But really I’m after any recommendations. I’m not looking for a free hand out or where I can score a free rom as I’m happy to pay but I just want to find a solution to tuning my car with the appropriate mods.. Any recommendations ?
Also a big thank you to everyone here… honestly what a place.. This forum is filled with information
I literally learnt and read all about evoscan, ecuflash, openport and etacs decoder today

Hi There !,
The thing is you have a Grimmspeed boost controller, I don't think you will be able to use a ''stock'' map without having too much boost, at least that is what happens on my car.
Other then that maybe you could reference yourself here:
or here: https://www.evoscan.com/merlins-open...-tuning-guides
What is your ROM ID ?

Since you have ecuflash, if you can get a full list of your mods especially any fuel system changes, you can get a remote tune set up by one of many very reputable tuners. This would be my first recommendation if you don't have a nearby shop. It should get the car running well enough to get you to a dyno tuner to fine-tune if you don't just DIY that part.
Try emailing hamish at limitless.co.nz to get your ROM/Definition sorted. Also, check this out http://evo.ripnet.us/rom/ And you can also fin, ROMs here and definition files here
While there are lots of base ROMs and definition files out there, I don't think you'll find a ROM that matches your mods and there's not much by way of repositories of open ROMs as a lot of tuners make their living off these tunes yet. There are a ton of resources on youtube and elsewhere if you decide to setup things yourself.
Good luck!
