I do not think you have to write to the ECU until you are done, but I have not used it yet.

I have never used the street tuner software, but rather had my dyno tuner use his tuner pro software, which gives more control over the ecu than the street tuner software did. I know many of the principals of proper tuning from what my tuner (who is also a good friend) has taught me, but I've never done my own tuning and am not familiar with the interface designs of the different softwares that are used.
Is the friend you are speaking of Doug at Topspeed?

Is ecutek's software easier to work with than the cobb? What about brain flash from works? I hear that they actually have been working with reflash technology for the EVO ECU longer than anyone else. Is that true also? I have been flip flopping back and forth between the works brain flash, ecutek, and the access port but can't seem to make a decision.
IIRC, you are in Atlanta. My car is getting EcuTeK tuned at Dyno4mance probably next weekend or whenever they get their cable. Come up and check it out. Its in Calhoun off I75, it can't be that far from you.

I love the fact that cobb has off the shelf maps, because I hate mail in flashes that aren't even based on dyno tuned cars with similar mods and too many companies do this.
I've mapped a ton of Subies for my friends that have Cobb APs with street tuners. The problem is that the shelf maps in most all cases were way too conservative. Like the fueling was a point and a half too rich, the boost was at 14psi, the timing was too low, etc. I understand that they have to be careful for different people and no two cars are the same, but if you can't get a Protune, there is no point at all IMO. They had done logging and were sent other maps, but I did way better on the dyno, because I was there. Tuning remotely sucks IMO and leaves a lot to be desired.

I will only go with reflash software that has a pc based interface where maps can be e-mailed from the company, downloaded onto the pc, and then uploaded into the ecu with a cable that plugs into the obd2 port, or in the X's case the CAN port.
What you should do instead is get a relationship with a tuner in your area. Dyno4mance if you want EcuTeK and Topspeed if you are into Cobb and if they will have Protuning control of the X ECU immediately. Go to both places and sniff out the operations. A closeby custom tune from a local competent tuner is better than a mail tune anyday.

I hope that ecutek now has the ability to receive maps via email and then load it onto some sort of map manager, because cobb definitely set the bar with that one.
Again, you have an EcuTeK and a Cobb tuner for the Evo X near you, and one or both were vendors on this site at some point. Go check it out and see for yourself. You are more than welcome to drive my car post EcuTeK mapping; I want you to see if my transmission shifts notchier than yours anyway.

Yeah, I would be happy to drive yours to see if it's notchier than mine, especially after it's been tuned so I can see how much fater it is than mine. I know Andrew up there at dyno4mance, and he's a good guy. BTW, my friend that I was telling you about is not Doug at top speed, it's a guy named chris that ran a shop in Colorado where I used to live. No offense to doug, but I had my sti tuned by him when I fist got it and was very disappointed with the quality of the tune. I hit boost cut 5 min after leaving the shop and that was an unpleasant experience. This was an EcuTek tune BTW. Anyway, it was not a good experience. BTW though, when I talked to Andrew at dyno4mance about a month ago he said that the only tuning software that he was going to be using was open ecu. Did this change or what? Anyway, let me know when you are going up there for sure, and I'll try to make it up there as well. I am about an hour + from the shop, but I'll make the drive to see the results of the tune and to meet you in person. I always like meeting fellow car enthusiasts, so that sounds like a good time. Oooh, I wonder if Andrew would give us a discount if we both got tuned?

They got EcuTeK ordered from the UK and it is shipping out this week. They bought it for the X only. So yeah, it changed very recently. They do open ecu on VIIIs and IXs.

They told me $750 for the flash with dyno time included. Andrew ordered 5 flashes to start, one of those is mine. I know there is a pretty big fee they have to pay for each flash, so the prices aren't negotiable. I've been in that shop a ton of times, and IMO its a really good deal with dyno time and printouts.

I'm up in Nashville, so its a 2 and a half hour drive for me, but I have got to get more power in this car. I'll send you a PM when they get it in and call me. We can go to the shop. If you drive my car and like it, maybe you can call dibs on one of the other flashes.

Because the 8 and 9 ecu use a different load calculation for boost control than they do for fuel and timing and this load calc is much more affected by temperature than the primary load calc. This causes serious differences in boost when temperature conditions change.

I have a greaddy EBC hooked up and just unpluged it cuz i am tired of the SES light coming on. I say wait until you decieded to get the car tune. It will make your car run like crap with out a tune.
