LBS. of Boost recommendations?

I had south coast mitsu put on the dejon boost controller and they put it up to 22lbs of boost. This is my first car with a turbo and everyone I talk to is amazed at the number. I am pretty sure that stock GSR X is putting out 14 lbs so the increase doesnt seem to overwhelming. I wanted to get some info on longevity with that much boost if it is a good idea or if the motor can handle. My buddy in an 04 sti says he wouldnt go that high even with all of his mods and tunes. Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I also have the injen cold air and the greddy full cat. Maybe a tune would be appropirate?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but factory boost is 22.75 psi. Alot of people are setting theres around stock, I have mine set to 24 psi and it is running fine. So you could probably turn it up a little if you want.

^Yeah the 14psi is the boost in the higher rpms because of the smaller turbo and stock wastegate. it spikes to around 22-23 psi stock though in the lower rpms. unless your car holds the 22psi to redline then they have more done than just a boost controller. which would also be fine just make sure you have the supporting tune to go along with it!

what would the tune do for the boost increase, more WHP? or is it for the safety of the engine.

A 23 psi spike is stock, tapering down to 15-16 stock.

Tell your friend this is not an STi. Stock this car hits about 23-24 psi and tapers down to 16-19 psi depending on the vehicle. What you want to do is the free wastegate mode to make it hold anywhere from 20-22 psi at red line.
