Differenced between HFC and Testpipe

I was wondering what the differences in performance and sound wise there is between a HFC (metal substrate) and a resonated test pipe. I assume HFC will pass emissions with no problem yes? Any insight would be most helpful. Thanks!

Not too much difference in sound. Yes, hfc is designed to pass emissions.

Not too much difference in sound....a little, but not a lot.

All HFC might not pass emissions. It all depends.....the good HFC's will not pass emissions and will throw a cell. If you get a HFC that DOES pass emissions, that also means it is restrictive and robbing horsepower.

On my VIII I ran an HFC for a year and did not pass emissions. I said F it, if I am not going to pass emissions, I might as well get a test pipe, so I did. I don't bother with HFC's anymore. There is no guarantee they will pass anyway.

Passing emissions may depend on your location. I know in Japan some HFCs fail the emissions test.

How about powerwise? Is test pipe going to make more power?

I got the HFC because I was told it cuts down on the smell ... I'm not worried about it passing emissions because I'm pretty sure the rest of my car wouldn't pass a real emissions inspection anyway lol

Yes it will. Cats in N/A cars don't make much difference, but with a turbo...the difference is huge! Personally, I would go with the test pipe. Just bolt your old cat on for emissions. Also remember, if you have a new car you will not be required to do emissions for 3 years (at least where I live). I haven't done emissions on my 2006 Evo yet.

BTW, you can still fail emissions with a HFC (and/or have a CEL) and it will still smell a little, but it is the "more" legal approach. With a test pipe, your car will smell like a go-kart or a lawnmower.

I believe the UR mini-muffler test pipe is the quietest out there.

Otherwise, HFC and resonated test pipes are pretty much the same in loudness.
