The ones that do either have a defect or abuse, disclosed or undisclosed.
Four Evos over a total of 80k, and I've lost one clutch. It was similar symptoms, I just made too much torque for the pressure plate on race gas- about 320 on a Dyno Dynamics, so about 360 on a Dynojet. When we pulled it, there was no signs of abuse on clutch or flywheel, as I had never launched the car at that point.
These Evo Xs are really heavy at almost 3600 pounds, so a good break in is essential, and I'd say no launching ever if you want it to last 50k. Otherwise, put the savings aside for an aftermarket one.
At the power I'm at now, I'd lay money I can get 75k out of this clutch, even if it has mixed tracking and autox, but no drag racing.
Some of the comments about me "riding the clutch" is just too funny, and stupid.
Sure there possibly could of been a defect on my clutch. I also think that the added 70whp, and the additional torque from the tune+filter, didnt help it either. Not to mention the track day session over at Laguna Seca..

Well, in most cases, when shifting hard, the rwd tires will slip (i.e...chirp) therefore relieving some load off the clutch. With AWD, tires don't slip, thus the clutch may be slipping a bit under heavy power-shifting. This is especially so, if Mitsu put a restrictor in the clutch line of the X to slow engagement like as in the previous models.
I had alot of people on this forum tell me or imply it was my fault when I had a problem even though this was my third Evo and fourth AWD turbo car. Turns out it was a defect. You may want to see if you can get the dealer to look at it. Hopefully the district rep will approve a tear down. For mine, I was leaking some tranny fluid in my garage, so that's how I figured out it had to be something else.
ok, just putting in my .o2, back on the newtiburon forum, I remember reading about how the stock clutches would go out on the tiburons so easily, which is a known problem. Well they worked through it and found out that a spring in the slave master cylinder is causing the burning and unnatural wearing of the clutch...

maybe this problem would be the same and if the spring is taken out, could help with the clutch lasting a little longer? Like i said, just my .o2 haha

I was on the freeway, going about 70mph. I then proceeded to do a lane change. While in 5th I gas it, and the RPMs just revvs up..
Now as far as finding a replacement clutch, I am completely lost. One thing is foresure though. I dont want another OEM clutch. But one that is more durable for the track, And still street friendly with the wife and baby in the back. So what do you guys reccommend? Thanks..

AMS recommended exedy.
this thread is very misleading... under 'normal' operating circumstances. if the clutch were to fail at 2700mi, i would say probably mfg defect.
i would ask the OP: what type of driving style was done to the car? was proper clutch break in completed? how many XXXXRPM launches on the clutch? how much torque does the engine put out..
only when u get the facts can you say "oh yeah. sorry to hear that man. but try ___insert brand here__ for your application"

its always hard to speculate when it comes to what happened.... For what its worth, my X has been tracked every month since jan 2008 and at 15k, im still on my stock clutch.
On my IX, i cooked my clutch at 6700 miles and in hindsight, i think that it was a combination of 75% 3076 turbo and 25% my driving habits and braking with clutch/engine, etc... .riding it during the turns, etc.
Analyse your driving patterns objectively and think about how often you drop your clutch at downshifting into the turns, etc. There could be defects, but my guess is its a combo of both....
