My damaged piston was my #4 also...no signs of detonation on any of the other 3.

we still need more info about your X bro. Do you have any mods, and what were you doing when the damage happened?

First off I was drag racing...logging with evoscan, no knock counts prior to the incident. I was running a conservative timing map, 11.3-4 AFR's, spiking to 26-27psi tapering off to 21-22 psi.

My car was loving this at first, I was running 11.8-9's at 116-117 mph all day. On the last past I shifted into 4th and felt it let go. I sprayed a quart of oil all over the track out my exhaust and saw a huge cloud of white smoke. I towed it home and parked it in my garage till a few weeks ago when I pulled the engine, tore it apart and saw what happened.

I believe it was ring land failure, but I'm rebuilding it now and not looking back.

Mods- Stock intake, UR UICP, DOM 2 turbo, DW 800cc injectors, UR o2/dp, UR TP, Greddy Ti-C cat-back, self-tuned on 104 unleaded race gas

Did you replace your fuel relay by chance?

Also, no damage to the block?

Relay had been replaced, no damage to the block whatsoever. Bored it over .020 over because I was sent 86.5mm pistons rather then stock bore...

This thread is enough for me to say F it. I can't believe all the failures on clean pulls. I bought a new OEM assembled shortblock from Mitsu after settling and deciding not to build it. I wanted to run 10s on the stock motor. I opened the box and there was cardboard and all kinds of debris in the cylinders. The top of the bore not only has no chamfer, it is a jagged edge with snags. The surface looks like ***** and there are other machining issues that I guess are ok for Mitsu, but nothing like this would ever leave my shop. I'm not much of an engine builder, but my head engine builder looked at it and couldn't believe they let junk like this out. I'm getting some Wisecos and Turbo Tuffs (for the 2nd time now ) ordered today so he can give me some piece of mind. I can't believe all the piston failures. Seems like an LS1

I'm fine if the 4B11 goes. I'll just have English Racing rebuild the engine so it never happens again. Sure, it will take a few thousand dollars, but it will have some amazing possibilities. I think I've come to terms with the possibility of it happening. Hope it doesn't, but when it does I'll be read.

Still a little skeptical of all these failures... has any of these failures had a pro tune from Buschur, Jester, GST, English Racing, etc? Or have they all been home brew tunes?

I had a LS1 with serious piston slap, factory rebuilt it and same thing. If you want something done right you have to do it yourself.

Blown Engine

Hi All!

11k miles. Broken rod through block and piston destroyed. Don't know if it went lean and detonated first or if the rod went causing the piston damage. Recently tuned conservately by CBRD so that wasn't the problem. I am at home so I don't have the figures. Will post boost tomorrow and other pertinent info.

Looking for a long block. Turbo is good but block and head is junk. Not sure what route to take.

Thanks for any help, info or input in advance.

Dean

Our local dealer is no help. He claims that the factory reps actually come to the dealership on every blown motor under warranty and if there is so much as a drop in air filter, they won't warrant it.

The vehicle has an FP-Red Turbo Upgrade with Deatschwerks 800cc injectors.
325whp/299wtq
22psi
12.8 a/f
Tuned by CBRD
#1 Cylinder and no detonation on any other cylinders
