I started noticing the same noise with less than 1,200 miles on the car (no mods). Took it to South Coast, pointed out exactly what the sound was, and the tech said it was normal. He sat in the passenger seat while I drove.

Something about the car being very electronically driven and something compensating for the decel once you let off the gas. If you drive on the freeway and practically hover (not literally, but just enough pressure for the electronics / ecu / whatever to know that your foot is on the gas) your foot over the gas pedal while you're decelerating, the noise goes away. As soon as you put your foot off the gas, even if there is virtually no change in your deceleration, the noise comes back. Put it in neutral and the sound is also gone. So I'm going to take the tech's assessment and not lose any sleep over it.

I have that noise too, last time i check with my local shop, and we found out the sound is from the drive shaft, and now i went to the dealership, they said it's my whole transfer case, so now im still waiting for my car update and stuff, hopefully they will cover it in my warranty.

So the vibration is due to the transfer case? Did they say what was wrong with it? That's weird because I took it to south coast and they said it was normal. I wonder if it's the same noise we're getting..

Someone on the other site thought it might be the springs on the clutch rattling. I have the same problem. When i press on the clutch it instantly stops. Im crazy paranoid about this.

Sorry to bump this thread from the dead but was there ever any solution to this or more information regarding where it came from? My T-case is fine and as everyone else has mentioned the vibration/chattering only occurs when I'm off the throttle.

I've had customers complain about vibration from straight through test pipes that don't have a bend incorporated into the design.

You may also have a loose exhaust shield rattling. Can you tell if the sound is underneath the vehicle?

Good luck man, hope you figure it out.

Michael

Thats interesting you say that, i just had my resonator cut out from an aftermarket exhaust and a straight pipe welded in its place by a very reputable evo shop who i will not name, but after that i started noticing a vibration and a loud metal on metal vibrating noise whenever i make turns, but its seems like it only does it at night when its cooler out, when its warm i dont hear or feel anything!! I guess i should start out by double checking heat shields.

On another note im also hearing the exact same things as the OP is, described perfectly. Im pretty sure it is not normal though in my case. Sounds like more of a loud grinding, mostly over 3k rpm. And even louder going downhill foot off the gas in gear coasting. Any help would be awesome. All drivetrain fluids recently changed too.

*Just realized this was in the evo X section, oh well, happens in my evo 8 haha*

It is in the X section but I am having the same issues as the OP and yourself also in an evo 8. I haven't had a chance to get her jacked up to look at the heat shield or the test pipe, but I'm not sure if that would help at all because it only occurs when cruising off throttle at or above 3k rpm as well. Simply revving the engine doesn't produce the sound at least in my case.

And its getting my attention cause winter is fast approaching here in canada.. Btw, i drive IV but then im experiencing the same situation as what u guys described.. Have anyone found any answer for this? It feels like its somewhere in my driveshaft but not positive about it..
