FP Red differences

Can anyone tell me exactly what the difference is between the original FP Red (circa '08), like mine, and the new anti-surge Red? ie what part of the turbo has actually changed, and can it be converted. Tried to call FP, but couldn't reach anyone. Thanks.

Yes it can be converted, you just need to buy a new compressor cover for it.

The compressor inlet changes to a 3" inlet up from the stock 2.5 or maybe 2.75".

The new cover also contains anti-surge ports to prevent surging from more aggressive spool up (usually aggressive mivec).

I think they are like 250 bucks or something and it would allow you to spool up your turbo sooner probably, so I would say it would be worth it. AMS tuned you so they more than likely tuned it so it didn't surge and probably left a bit of spool on the table to do so.

However the new cover's typically lose some power, 1-2%. So maybe you don't want it.

EDIT: i was going to try to link something from their website, but it looks like it is down for now.

OK, thanks. I mainly get surging at low RPM on the HWY. I'm thinking about doing this though, as my hotside housing has a hairline crack, so I need to pull the turbo anyway. That or just wait for the FP Black, but who knows how long that could be.

lol!

If I had a choice between the old and new setup.. I'd be undecided. lol

I'm not sure if I'd want better spool or better top end.

Oh well, I guess I'll be happy with what I get then.

Either way I think on a stock motor most people won't be maxing the top end of the red...even on 33psi my car still was climbing at redline.

I didn't notice it dropping off ever and bounced off the rev limit quite a few times because it was tough to shift fast enough.

What makes you say that the new version of the Red has 1-2% less top end? It seems like people have been pushing it farther since I maxed mine out. obviously different tunes, etc.

This sounds like the best thread ever so far. No one knows nothing which is what everyone knows
