Question on a custom exhaust

I am very new to moding for the most part. I stopped buy a good muffler shop today to ask about a custom exhaust. They can do it however I want. At this point I want to go with high flow cat.
My questions are:

Their bender is not mandrel; will that really make a difference on the HP gains?

The guy told me that a cheaper way would be to open my OEM muffler, gut it out and close it. He said the he has done that to a few cars including his and the results were great, has anybody heard of that here?

Is there a way to run the car without a cat and trick the ECU without a flash? I have heard the placing a spark plus arrester between the bung and the pipe trick the ecu?

Do things right or just leave it alone.

Mandrel bending will give you greater gains than crush bening..its better and smoother flow.. I would just do themuffler mod for now (if you are on a budget and save for the exhaust you want in the future). There is a DIY somewhere on either this forum or the other..

Edit: If your state emissions isnt to strict, run the test pipe, its cheaper, better for performance, and "louder" . Then buy or borrow a tactrix cable and flash your car with one of gunzo's base map's with disabled codes..

The budget is always a concern, but not my main one. I liked the idea when I heard it due to the fit and the sound, plus my experience with replacing exhaust is that I don’t put them back, I have two sitting on my garage.

I would go with a modded stock muffler as well. Save up and just buy a nice one later. If you want to eventually switch again, it is hard to sell a custom exhaust. You could sell a stock muffler or a bolton exhaust a lot easier when u switch.

look around for a used one, if its in not to bad shape you can get an awesome deal, i got my buschur cross flow for $375 shipped which is probably cheaper than any shop would charge for a custom exhaust.

Your money is better spent on a used, quality exhaust.

a. Mandrel bends are optimal for exhausts.
b. Your chances of receiving shoddy work and/or droning off a custom made exhaust increase significantly.
c. Muffler shops are muffler shops. Buy your stuff for Evos at Evo shops.
d. With all the choices you have and the fact that you say money isn't the biggest priority here, I wouldn't skimp out on the one thing you will hear and have to deal with EVERYDAY with your Evo.

Thanks Fittest! I have changed my mind and will purchase either a used one that was originally pricier, or a new one that costs around $500 to $600. BTW, the shop's price was $670, that would include installing a down pipe that I am in the process of purchasing.

I thought of getting custom exhaust but I think it's better to get a exhaust that's already made for ur car...
