Oil: 5w30 or 10w30?

I will be changing my oil tomorrow and was wondering if I should go with 10w30 racing oil from Amsoil. I will be doing mountain runs and occasional drag racing.

I have stage 2 mods with tune(which I will be getting this weekend) and it is really humid and hot down here. So what do you guys recommend?

If I dont go 10w30 from amsoil I will be getting their 100% synthetic 5w30

Ahh, the never ending engine oil debate

I run Mobil 1 for three simple reasons: It served me well in my IX, it's cheap at Walmart, and it's factory-fill.

I did switch my X from 5W-30 to 10W-30 though since that's what my dealer uses (I got a free oil change coupon when I first bought my car) and recommends down here in TX.

Also run the high mileage mobil 1 synthetic, not to be confused with extended performance(do not use). It has more zddp.

Climate will ultimately dictate which would be ideal. Winter climates, your better off with 5w30. But both are valid for other situations. There is another oil weight that is often ignored and dismissed from the oil debate. Mobil 1 like all the other companies are always tweaking their formula at the time of industry standards expire and get tougher. 0w30 has been tweaked in terms of formulation and its high heat tolerances. It is very likely you may see this oil in futures evo vehicles as Mitsubishi continues to make its Green push.

My car used EP most it's life now on the HM. EP is good stuff (lots of UOA's on the net to support it) but it does have lower ZDDP than the HM, which of course is only a concern if you have a FP Red or Black.

But we've beat that topic to death on here already

Yeah, I'm on the stock turbo. I just started to use the HM 5w30 because its the same price as the regular. Little extra protection, why not?

Yea I use Amsoil SSO 0-30 as well. Had my motor built and was told my pistons looked like they were never in the car.

Assuming S.F. is San Francisco, I'd stick with 5W-30. Same with any other climate that isn't hot and gets cold winters.

This is what I am thinking about running next time I change my oil.

Since most of the damage/wear and tear occurs at the startup 0w-30 will provide better protection when I start the car for the first time in the mornings.

And regular operating temps are same as 5w-30 and 10w-30
