Timing Chain Indicator....FML

Ok so, I was driving in a school zone when the dreaded triangle with exclamation point inside showed up on my display. I looked it up in the manual and sure enough its the timing chain wear indicator. After lots of research on the forums I realized that I'm prolly going to get the shaft as far as getting it repaired.

So onto the fun part, I took the car into the dealer knowing that they were not going to cover it under warranty because I have full bolt ons / tune / suspension ect. I started to get scared when the tech said "oh that's an interesting light, we've never seen that one before" but reluctantly I left my car there for a "diagnosis". Few hours later they call me back saying "your timing is off and we need $700 to open it up and diagnose further" They then proceeded to blame my tune as the culprit of the timing chain (which keep in mind they don't even know whats going on with the chain yet, they just said that my timing is off).

At this point I'm kinda lost on what to do, I picked up my car and just going to let it sit until I can figure something out. I know the chain is hella cheap but is there no way to do this yourself? I really don't wanna pay $700 for them to figure out whats going on, especially since they even said that they had never seen this before. I'm sure I can inspect the chain myself with those training videos lurking around here but if the chain checks out fine where do I go from there?

Stupid chain, there goes my new brides I was planning on ordering this week ....FML
And for the record, 38k miles on the clock

screw the dealer. Buy a new chain, have the shop that did your tune put it on and check to make sure the tune is still good. Problem solved, and should be less than 700 all in.

Well the problem is that my tune is an etune (clipse3gt), so I don't think he will fly down here to put it on haha. I went and rescued my car from the dealer, going to drop it off somewhere else tomorrow. I just wish there were better performance shops around here

Well, I don't know where you are at, but I would get it to a good tuner shop and let them handle it. Mighty be less than 700 and I would rather a shop like, AMS, Cobb, CBRD, AWD, do it than the dealer..

You take your car to the dealer with anything on it and kiss your warranty by. Just go to a shop nearby hell central florida turbo is only an hour from you and you can leave your car there in better hands than any dealer. I have friends in Miami that drive up there to get stuff done. http://centralfloridaturbo.com/ good luck

There is a TSB out for the learned values of the chain. It is fixing peoples problems. Go look on evoxforums for the writeup TSB copy.

Tephra has this sorted so you blokes won't need the TSB relating to this to be performed.

I found this interesting that on the 2010 model below, there is no chain guide like there is on the 08' models. I took a photo of this to show you the 2010 camshaft stay without the chain guide whereas sitting right next to it I placed the 08' part and you can clearly see the 2008 part has the chain guide fitted.

Interesting.
