Is the only difference changing the thrust bearing out for a ball bearing cartridge? I thought this was being done for reliability, performance-wise the turbo will produce the same as the non-BB variant.

Yup, basically. Transient response will be a bit improved, but that's about it.

Read:

And:

Lastly:

Short version, reduced power loss of the ball bearing improves the overall turbine mechanical efficiency.

You are correct, but it's a very general statement and ultimately the differences between thrust/ball bearing Black variants will be transient response (spool) and reliability. Peak power is largely defined by flow and without modification to the geometry of the turbo (housing, wheels) both variants are going to yield the same numbers at peak. This being the case, expect the BBBlack (above say ~3500 rpm) to generate the same power as its non-BB predecessor.

I'm interested to see some results also. I have an FP Red with full exhaust on my car now. Would the cost of pulling it and getting ball bearings installed be worth it for the quicker spool? How many RPM's quicker would it spool?

^ Would not be worth it to me. Huge cost to change when spool is probably no more then 100rpm earlier if at all.
