Another loud t-case thread

Hey guys,

My 2013 evo x just turned 6500 miles. Ive noticed a whining noise starting when I am cruising, I JUST read that the t-case fluid should be changed at 5k miles so I am in the process of ordering some fluid for it. Do you guys think that the noise is because the fluid is worn out due to break in or could my T-Case be going out already?!

I have never launched the car in fear of shredding the stock clutch but the car does receive some spirited driving (as every Evo should)

Somebody put me at ease as the car has FULL bolt ons and I really do not want to have to take all the parts off and try to convice Mitsu to give me a new t-case.

No need to change your transfer case fluid that early...doesn't hurt to do it, but it's not needed. Honestly, I'm guessing the noise is actually the stock Advans getting slightly uneven wear. They are very noisy tires to start with, then add in a little uneven wear from the non-ideal factory alignment and you have a recipe for a lot of noise.

When I replaced my Advans at 10k miles the tire change alone went from making the car sound like a worn out tractor back to nice and normal. I even had my alignment done at 750 miles, then again at 2k miles when I lowered the car.

The noise occurs when cruising, and goes away if I accelerate and I can make it come and go by touching the gas pedal a little

I just had an alignment done with my eibach springs but switched them out for coilovers about 100 miles after the alignment. The car has RPF-1's 18x9.5 wheels

OEM Advan tires still? What you're describing is nearly identical to what I experienced. You can check to make sure your transfer case fluid wasn't overfilled from the factory, but I believe they cleared that problem up.

Yea stock advans slightly stretched, I already bought the fluid for the t-case so I may as well change it. I am curious to see how much metal flake the fluid has from breaking it in anyways.

I will! Thanks for putting me at ease at least for now! I dont imagine the tranny would be whining at speed? Should I change that fluid as well?

While you're under there, you might as well. Do the rear diff fluids too.

changed fluid, no difference....I was searching and saw a thread about a guy who's friend misshifted from 2nd to 1st instead of 3rd and about 2 nights ago my friend did this as well. He is having the same sound and had to have tranny rebuilt to stop the noise...the car drives fine but makes this stupid noise

Find another local X that has fairly new and evenly worn tires and swap his wheels/tires on for a quick test-drive.

Okay, if anything Ill just deal with the noise until the tranny gets notchy or something detrimental happens, I cant justify pulling the tranny and having it rebuilt for $1xxx when it still drives perfectly fine.

Hey man, i have a 2013 Evo X GSR and i have this whine as well. It goes up and down with speed, but not when i am in neutral free reving. It is the transmission whining. My room mate has an Evo 8 5 speed and makes a similar whine, and he has 90k miles on it, but it has made this sound since he bought it. I have found a few others locally and notice the exact same noise. I wouldnt worry about it until you notice a difference in the transmission.

Also, i don't think it is the tires. The whine is consistant with rpm while in gear, not with road speed. I swapped on my winter blizzak's and the whine was the same.

That makes me feel ALOT better. I sent 2 videos to Kracka and he said he couldnt distinguish any noises from the road/exhaust so maybe I need to roll my windows down crank my music up and let my external wastegate do all of the talking
