Rear diff going out?
Rear diff going out?
So I don't know if it is related but I change my read fluid(not the ayc) about 3 weeks ago. The car felt different afterward. Felt like maybe I put too much fluid. Felt kinda sluggish. But that's not the problem. I'm hearing a strange clunking noise from the rear maybe the trunk. I thought it's something rolling around back there but I've empty everything and still still clunking. Usually happen when I taking off, jerk my car back and forth. My question is if it's my rear differential is my car driveable? The car drives fine. No light or any sign of drive train issue. No whine. It's the weirdest thing. Shouldn't I be getting a warning light saying my rear diff is about to go out?
A diff can seize when it dies, so if there's a chance of it being the diff, then at least avoid highway speeds.
To test if it's the diff, the best thing to do is figure-eights. Those work them over, so you hear them complain.
Another possibility, given what you wrote, is a bushing where the diff mounts to the subframe. Those you just look at.
Last point: the diff (left) side of the rear gets Diaqueen LSD oil. That's what you put in there, yes?

^good tip ill try the figure 8. what i notice when i was changing the rear diff with the atf that i drained look more dark, thick, sluggish then the red cocktail atf i put in, is that normal? atf stands for Automatic Transmission fluid right?
Wait. ATF only goes in the right side, where the plates for the AYC clutches are. If you put ATF in the left side, where the diff is, get it out now. The "cocktail" that people talk about is for the transmission and has nothing to do with any of this. The left (diff) side in the rear gets straight Diaqueen LSD gear oil.
Have you seen the handy picture I made? Third post in this thread: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...ssues-etc.html
edit: forgot to answer your question; yes, ATF = automatic transmission fluid; should be Diamond SP-III or equivalent in the right (AYC) side in the rear.

i checked the picture and made sure. i went back and forth like a million times. double check and re check. on the third picture im positive i put the LSD gear oil on the differential mechanism and SP-III on the Torque transfer. the SPIII is what im talking about being redish in color. is it suppose to be like that?

Cool thanks. The sound that I'm talking about is more noticeable in the morning when it's cold. When I got to work its not really there. Driving me crazy. Hopefully it's not my ayc pump.
i am actually experiencing the same thing right now. Mine seems to make the noise mostly when decelerating but I can also hear a noise coming from the rear at highway speeds. I am due for the fluids to be changed but I have not had the chance to do it yet. Mine does it whether it is hot or cold though.
