HFC and Tune
HFC and Tune
I was wondering if anyone has installed a HFC and tuned? Is the stock exhaust that restrictive where I would NEED a CBE?
I've read where you can change the CBE and not require tune. So I was thinking if I got a tune and get a HFC now, I wouldn't have to get another tune when installing a CBE.
Will this setup be beneficial?
My EVO is starting to feel a tad bit slow, and I was thinking about getting a tune. But, I figured what the hell, might as well install a HFC. I would do both a HFC and CBE, but I didn't want to shell out that kinda money right now (just got done replacing my rotors, brakes, fluid changes, and installing minor mods).

no need for a tune on a catback exhaust since the stock cat will still be restrictive. a test pipe or hfc however will require a tune but it would be a waste of money to install one and get a tune when you can save up for other parts and get a tune with all the parts. i suggest investing on a bigger intercooler first since the lag caused by the pipes expanding seems to be a bigger issue.
This is my understanding as well:
- Cat is the biggest restrictions of the TBE
- HFC/TP requires a tune, CBE does not
Given the above there is still some conflicting data regarding installing a HFC/TP on an otherwise stock system. Some threads suggest that doing so would yield almost no HP gain and is a waste of time. This is somewhat contradictory to the two facts stated above. However, while the cat is the biggest restriction, it's not the only restriction.
- Would installing a HFC/TP on an otherwise stock system yield an increase in HP?
- How would this compare to a full TBE?
- Do you need a retune after adding a CBE to an already existing HFC/TP
Can someone knowledgeable comment on the above. I'm thinking of installing a HFC and keeping the stock muffler (noise).
Care to expand on this statement?

From what I understand (after reading a few other threads), the catback gives little to no performance gains. As stated above, the catalytic converter is the most restrictive and would yield the most if replaced with a TP/HFC. I am going to get a HFC for my RA and an intake for the GST base map tune. Technically, this would be considered a TBE if you also got a DP. The muffler and midpipe don't do enough to make a difference.
