Are my valves bent or worse?!?!

Howdy, first post, not the one I wanted to post, let me tell you. Let me give you the stats and the story:

2015 Evo MR - totally stock, 2500 miles

On the way to work this morning, in 2nd gear, high rpms, going around a slow, tight corner. On exit, floored it, hands were all the way around, so when i hit the paddle to upshift, I instead grabbed the downshift. Went hard into 1st, SES light flickered, let off gas, shifted into the right gear, all seemed well.

Get to a stop light a little while later, pretty substantial sputtering at idle. When getting on it at about 4-5k rpm, what feels like knocking/rattling and the SES light flickers.

Did I bend the crap out of the valves? or something worse?

hmmm im suprised it let you shift into first. Yea if the SES light is flashing i would just take it in to mitsu and dont give them many details and just say it came on and see what they say.

ya the mr shouldnt downshift into first at hight rpm. As stated id take it to the dealer for them to fix. I see no reason as to why they could deny it. as even if you told it to down shift it shouldnt and would be a malfuntioning unit.

Appreciate the feedback, still not sure what allowed it to shift down like that. Had a friend pull codes, was a shift error code of some type, nothing else. Last thing we tried was pulling the plugs. Plug closest to the drivers side had made contact with the piston (if you held the flashlight just right you could see the dent it made) breaking the ceramic insulation causing it to drop over the gap where the spark normally occurs. Thus the misfiring! When at low cruising speeds there appeared to be enough pressure to push it up to allow smooth low speed driving.

Anyhow, long story short, new set of plugs, running like brand new.

Talk about dodging the proverbial bullet.....

Thanks again!

ouch..... If the piston managed to actually make contact with the spark plug then I would seriously suggest you put it all back together the way it was and take it back to the dealer and get them to check the engine. If you have damaged the piston crown, then having them check everything is the best option, the impact might cause you future issues if it is not dealt with, especially if you decide to mod your engine.

Better to have them log it and fix it now than when you have your car modded and have them say its because your car was heavily modified and that's what caused the issue.

x2, and see if they have any idea why it allowed you to downshift into first like that

I can't disagree, sounds like good advice. I'm off tomorrow for prez day, I'll head to the dealership with a wide-eyed look of innocence and see what they can come up with.

Thanks for the advice!

OP, i had the same issue with you and i am also in Phx. i went to the dealer, mark mitsu at scottsdale, they did gave me a hard time on it. finally, they declined me however my car was modded but i went back to stock before i turn it in. i had end up to build the engine along with sst clutch upgrade. good luck to you at the dealer, if you need any help of building the engine, feel free to PM me. there are a couple of local guys that has really good reputation.
