Looking for good Jekyl/Hyde exhaust.
I just picked up a 2010 SE and it came with a Greddy Spectrum Elite exhaust. It's great for daily driving and highway travel, but doesn't have my "presence" when driving hard. So I want something much louder when racing. But since I drive it long distances to events, I don't want to give up highway comfort.
I think that means I should be looking at exhausts with a removable silencer(s). Unfortunately, most exhaust clips don't give a good feeling of what an exhaust is like inside the car. And practically none do comparisons with and without silencers inside the cabin.
I do know about the Varex muffler, and while cool, it's pretty expensive. Also, exhaust cutout valves have a bad reputation for reliability.
So I'd like to get some opinions on silencer exhausts with straight-through mufflers, especially when catless.
Which system do you have?
How is it on the highway with the silencer?
Would you drive 9 hours while listening to it without resorting to ear plugs or Advil?
Thanks.

I was hoping someone with a N1 style exhaust would chime in on what it's like to live with it both with and without the silencer inserted.
I have the English racing boost activated test, been using for about a year now. It does exactly what your looking for, quiet until you hit 7psi then it's like an open dump. I have mhi and flex fuel, 450hp on stock cat back. But my only complaint is I'm not a big fan of the noise it makes when I'm 50% throttle or when the waste gate is partially open. To me it's not a sexy exhaust note. I picked up a T1r76cat back , will put it on in the spring
I don't have much experience with removable silencers first hand but I was looking at the Blitz Nur spec R single exit, I believe that had the option of a silencer.
Also
Nvidia Q300 is pretty quiet normal driving and has a loud bark when you go wot.
Corsa dual exit sounds pretty good too, no drone.

Silencer? Why bother.
I live with an N1 style exhaust daily. Car has an AFI tubular manifold, ported hotside, 3" tubular downpipe to a nothing but 3" straight pipe to the Tsudo "N1" rear fart can muffler. Nothing else, no cat, no resonators. It's really not that bad. I thought it was going to be, but it's not. The car is pretty loud on the outside but surprisingly modest on the inside. This is a car that I drive a lot, and enjoy the exhaust. I have a full interior and mostly a full trunk so that helps keep some of the noise down.

Although it's convenient and actually a good solution to the e-cutout reliability issues, I don't think it's quite what I'm looking for..

What you're going to run into when you do things like that is differentiating exhaust pressure. My gut instinct tells me that it's not a smart idea.
I'm glad you mentioned the partial throttle thing - I have been contemplating picking one up and you're right... it'd sound like a really bad exhaust leak. I think you'll really like the T1R Sparrow - has a nice rip to it at WOT, a rumble through the parking lot, but is pretty quiet inside the car. Gets a 9/10 from me.
