Built Block and Stock Heads

Hey Everyone,

I was wondering how many Evo X out there running built Blocks and stock heads? My budget can only take me so far and only plan on building the bottom end.

Question is what are you doing with it? Projected power output and turbo size? Hopefully you've already budgeted on sleeving it.

Thanks for your input. Currently just driving it around here and there. My budget as of right now can build the block and install it. Debating on waiting a year and get the heads done at the same time. Shooting for 600HP.

What do you mean by built head? Cams and springs? Cams and full valve train upgrade with non-oem parts?

The OEM valvetrain is pretty stout but with cams at the very minimum you should do a spring upgrade as well. If you have the head off, I would highly recommend upgrading the cams and valve springs at this time.

As far as oversized valves, porting and all that jazz, if you are shooting for just 600hp, don't even bother.

Thanks razorlab. That’s is what I was looking for. I was debating on just doing the block and leaving everything else stock. But with everything apart, I might as well do camshaft and springs.

For 600hp, just do cams and springs. No need for anything else.

For a reliable 600WHP, I think you will want to definitely sleeve it though. Agreed, cams and springs are what you'll need for that power level. Not crazy expensive once it's all apart.

That’s the road I’m planning to go down. Sleeved block keeping it at 2.0l with cams and springs in the head. I was going to port the head but my pockets are not ready & I want to get back to driving the car again.

Yea you don't really need to port the head for your goals.

Mine has OEM ports and my car made 600whp+ pretty effortlessly. It's all in the selection of components.

In fact, I have zero ported anything on my car currently. I had a port matched OEM intake manifold for a larger throttle body but I haven't put it on the car yet, and might not because the car already makes great power without it.
