Starting Issue

Hi my name is Logan, I have a 2014 Evo gsr with 125k on it. I just starting getting this starting issue. I browsed forums for a while but am getting a lot of different answers. I have an issue where when I start the car, not all the time only twice in the last 3 days, it has a little bit of a long crank and sputters once then starts up totally normal. I have no power loss when driving no codes or lights, battery is 1 year old optima, just replaced the spark plugs, looked fine only smelled burnt maybe a lean condition? I got the car a few years ago I havnt personally put anything aftermarket on it but I’ve noticed previous owners have a put a couple small things aftermarket on it (exhaust, intake, hot side charge piping, boost solenoid). Ive seen mostly fuel related stuff on forums I’m just not sure how to proceed in figuring this out. Thank you for your future advice! Oh also I always cycle the key to on and wait 4-5 second before a start the car.

I'd check for boost leaks. Start there, i am sure with the age and miles you may have developed a small leak somewhere. Has the car been tuned at all? If not that maybe a problem as well. Another thing could be igniter going bad for the coils. Lots of easy and simple things to check for.

ok I’ll do that. What do I need a smoke thingy? Also I have no idea if the car has been tuned but I’ve had it for 3 years now never had this issue before

Smoke would be easiest way to do it, but your can hook up a boost leak tester to your turbo and fill it with air as well. Most people to 20 to 30 psi and make sure the car is top dead center for timing that way all the valves are closed and use soapy water. If you don't lknow what a boost leak tester is just search they are easy to make if anything. But if you know someone with a smoke machine that would work better no soapy water needed. If the car has mods to it more then likely it has been tuned, but if you put stuff on it yourself and didn't tune it id start there. Or maybe take it to a shop that maybe does evo work or has the tuning capability and just see if they can plug in and look at the tune for your to see if it has been touched. A good tuner will know by looking at your rom.
