Smile 9-MR or Wait for the X-MR

Ok, B****'s listen up. I need your help.

IF YOU CANT BEAT'EM JOIN'EM

I'm looking at picking up a used 9-MR or Wait for the X-MR. Do you think the X-MR is worth the extra 10/12k, over a used 9-MR? I could do alot to the 9-MR with that extra 10/12. I thought I would come here and ask the people who would know best.

Thanks for the help.
J.

do you have money to mod it? judging from your sig, you like to mod cars, so I'd go for the used IX-MR. . .the X-MR sounds even more luxurious than the base X is, and no one knows how the auto, dual clutch system will handle the extra power. . .IX!!!

Listen up homie. Most ppl on this forum are IX fanboys so yea, they will say IX no matter what. Truth is, if you like to mod your car you MIGHT be better off with the IX because X just came out and no one really knows what it's capable of. If you just want a EVO, then it's really up to you. You got two X to pick from... One is Manual and one is Semi. No one driven the Semi yet but, I doubt it will bomb if not Mitsu would not risk putting it on the MR. Also, this Semi might reach it's limit before the Manual X so if you plan on tuning an X in the future, going with GSR is a safer investment.

My opinion, from everything I heard, X is a better handling car and all you gotta do is add those HPs to it and it will be a beast. But, moding for the X just started and no one knows for sure if it can compete with the old motor. But, buying a used EVO is like dating a hooker... She's been beat and torn in every way possible...

To the OP, what's your ultimate goal for your next Evo? Are you looking for a nice daily driver that is fast and handles well? Are you looking to build a drag racing monster? Are you looking for the ultimate track machine? Tell us what your goals are and we can better help you.

Depending on what you want to accomplish, the X MR or the IX MR will be the better choice.

Definitely need to know more info about how you wan to use the car. The new MR is a wildly different car then the older one. Most obviously for the SST transmission being the only option. However, additionally, if you plan to mod for power, you are going to run into problems. The MR is going to take far longer than teh GSR to crack and be able to modify basically at all. Even a MBC, intake, or exhaust can shut down the transmission computer. It is apparently hyper sensitive to change and will need to be cracked. I am told that this is going to be extremely difficult compare to simply cracking the engine ecu.

If you do not care about upping the power for a while, then its a matter of which car appeals to you more, and if the sst is worth the money to you. I actually like the SST, but may not be satisfied with stock power. The real world practicality of the SST and performance on track are a big plus. Sure it takes out the fun of some good heal toe shifting, but with the amount I am on track VS on city streets, its a fair trade.

lets just say I'm not rich, but I do like to mod my cars. A friend of mine had a EVO-8, and I spent alot of time in that car. We went to see the new X-GSR, and I really liked most every thing about it. I would really like to get the new trans set-up in the X-MR, but it sounds like its not the way to go.

Thanks, J.

Well you pretty much summed it up. I want the new MR with the semi auto but, will it handle the HP I'm looking to through at it. Or take a used hooker... That's been beat and torn in every way possible...and turn her into a Triathlete. Wow when you put it that way I think I would spend the extra 10k on the X-MR.

Dont you think Tilton, ACT, and Exedy are going to make an upgraded clutch for the MR that can/could/should handle 800+ WHP????

Thanks, J.

Get the IX mr. U can still find a few new ones for cheap. The 4g63 can handle more boost and make more power

AN evo without a clutch is no fun

You still haven't told us what you want to do with the car.

If you have to have a semi-auto, than the X MR or the new Ralliart would be a good choice for you.

As far as upgrade go on the SST tranny, it's still very much up in the air at this point since noone has gotten their hands on it yet. But, if you do some research on VW/Audi's DSG (which is identical to the SST) you'll see that the transmission definitely has limits when it comes to mods. And, it's EXTREMELY expensive to fix. CharlesJ also mentioned that you also have to hack the computer that controls SST which is going to take some time.

But, again, what do you want to do with the car?

Well I want a car that handles better and is faster than the STI. And dont have the money to spend on a new GTR, and srart upgrading it after that. I'm not a drag racer. I do want to take it to an occasional track day. You know your adverage every day daily driven, caged, four door with 800+ on C16.

On occasion, I roll with the SECC. "Scottsdale Exotic Car Club" they run;
Lamborghini's
Enzo's
F40/50's
SLR's
Saleen S7 Twin Turbo's
Carrara GT's
Zonda's
And more, you get the idea. It realy upsets those guys, when your 30k STI flat out accelerates almost all of the listed above. I just dont have the top end that they do.

I need something that has 600/800whp, handles, accelerates hard, brakes good, and can still take my kids to school.

In that case, it's hard to give a firm recommendation based on what you want.

1) You want faster than an STI. The IX is faster, the X is slower (marginally, but still slower).

2) You want a car that handles better than an STI. Both the IX and X deliver that. The X seems to have a slight edge in skidpad numbers, but the IX is faster on a track. Pick your poison there.

3) You don't drag race, but do the occasional track day. Both the IX and X deliver that, but all the magazines say the IX is the better track star because of it's more raw feel.

4) You will daily drive it. The X will be the winner here.

5) You want 600-800hp. The IX is the better choice right now at this moment because it's been proven with the 4G63 to get to those power levels. The jury is still out on the X's 4B11t since noone has been able to mod the heck out of it and see what it can handle. So, you can choose a proven engine or you can place a bet that the X will be able to match the 4G63.

6) You want something that brakes hard. Both IX and X do with a slight edge to the X.

7) Need to take the kids to school. Either car will do that, although the X will likely have better side crash ratings so it should be a little bit safer than the IX.

This is all my opinion, but most of it is based on facts from all the testing and information available so far.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your choice.
