From 06 STi to Evo X
I see it isn't just IWSTI where you can put up a thread about your pretty new car and have trolls come through and say nothing of value, just "I hate your car." Sigh.
Glad to know there are a few more people switching camps.
I'm not a huge fan of the new STi's exterior (although I do like the interior and think it looks nicer then the new Evo's interior) but it could grow on me. My only issue is that I want Navi which means it's going to cost me ~39k which is 9k more than my 05 STi cost me and I don't think it's worth it.
The stock tune on the new 08 STi also scares the crap out of me (very lean like on the 07 STi which have had a lot of blown engines) so I would want a reflash, but most of the dealers around me are getting very bad with warranty claims on even lightly modified cars thanks to SoA.
The only thing I plan to do with the Evo would be suspension upgrades for autox. But I'm sure a year from now I'll have replaced a ton of stuff.

The only thing you really should need to do to the Evo X is maybe a rear sway. Other then that, if I were to get one, I can honestly say I'd get the equivalent of a Stage II in Subaru terms (don't know what that is for the Evo) and be done with it.
You can do worse than having to decide between an Evo or an STI
. Congrats on the new car. I've felt the tempation myself, and even went and looked at the X, but I can't convince myself to make the jump. Mostly because I've got the STI perfected (Recaros, Bilsteins, etc), and going back to a bone stock X would be a downgrade. I'm sick of blowing money on a car just to make it what I want, so now that I've got it dialed in, I'm staying with it for a while longer. I've also only got 44K miles, so it's just broken in...
Again, congrats on the new toy. GG is exactly what I would get, too. Sweet car.

Exactly
. With that said I have no first hand experience on the STI handling but the EVO X I own just won't let go of the pavement..I swear this thing is insane when it comes to grip. I think the weak clutch pisses me off more.

That's another issue for me as well, knowing that $39k would be what I would pay for the STI and then end up dumping $3-4k in suspension and a tune to get it to behave the way I want it to.

LOL Seriously I don't know how many times I've heard my Subaru friends and Subaru autoxers say "I wish I can get my car to feel/handle/turn etc.. like an Evo..."
But have you driven the Evo X? Getting STI power would be easy and I think the handling would be hard to match without intermediate/expert suspenion tuning on an 04-07 STI.

We'll have to see how the Evo X is when I get it, but I suspect it will be very similar to my friend's Evo IX. At an autox school we swapped cars at the end of the day. While he was amazed at the low end grunt of my STi (mostly thanks to the extra .5L of displacement) I was SHOCKED at how smooth his car was. At the time he only had springs and a rear sway bar but the car was so light and nimble in the corners where as my STi would be having violent body roll after violent body roll. And my STi had essentially a completely modified suspension (Spec-C Type-RA adjustable struts, Tarmac springs (stiffer then the JDM STi Pinks), BIG sways, end links, and strut bars.)
After some of the issues I've had with my car and the run around from dealers for it being modified the only thing I will be doing to the Evo (if anything) would be suspension parts. It seems that it is still fairly easy to get more HP from some easy mods on the Evo X and once some better forms of engine management come put it should be even easier and safer I don't want to have the headaches of warranty denials.
There is always something mysterious about the other side. If you buy a EVO and never driven an STI or vice versa you will always wonder what it would have been like to get the other car. I made my decision with the EVO X because the new STI is not aesthetically pleasing to me. I like Subaru though, my favorite was the 04 body they had going. I always wish we could get our 2.0l engines to sound like the boxer engines in the STI though

I love the 04-05 body style and I'm going to miss mine a ton.

If you want to get the STi exhaust note in an Evo get someone to design an un-equal length exhaust manifold/header for the Evo and then the Evo can have the 'boxer rumble' as well.
I was in the same boat as well with my '06 STi reached the 36,000 mile limit and was browsing the Mitsu Dealership when I saw the new EVO X's, got a deal too good to let go and traded my STi '06. I do miss the STi in many ways. But this new EVO X can handle well in the twisties! A few mods and she'll be just right for me. As soon as mods roll out at a reasonable price and tune. I do admit, te EVO X just handles well in turns and will not let up, when you think you reached the car's limit it lets you know your not there yet, and you push it just a little more. I've gone through some off ramp curves going about 65mph when the sign says 40mph. But I am not really pushing it either. But what a rush.

at this point it is useless to compare the evo to the 335i or 335xi since it has a very good handling bar none. let's start comparing it to the lotus elise/lotus exige then
good call.i can't deny i've also toyed with the idea of getting a used elise and a cheap beater/daily driver...
Ya but I love the evo. To me its just a better car in every way. Ya my STi was fast, but I grew tired of the car. I have long commutes to work, and i hated the STi's seats. The mileage was high, so I was in the market for a new one anyways. To tell ya the truth my evo actually feels faster than the sti on the highway. In the end of the day I wanted a comfortable, refined, car with great performance. Since theres really only two cars that fit my criteria (evo/sti) I went with it. I hate the new STi so i didn't even give it a second look. I'm actually really happy with my decision and dont regret it one bit. Oh and don't worry, no OFFENSE taken.
Yea Subaru really dropped the ball on redesigning the STi for the enthusiasts, they really sold out and tried to go to a broader audience. From a business perspective I can't blame them, I would have done the same thing; however from an enthusiast perspective I'm still bummed.
