Evo X in snow/daily driver?

Hey guys, picking up an evo x very shortly. In about a month, just want the weather to get better here in Chicago. I just want to ask you current X owners how reliable it seems as a daily driver and if any of you have already taken it out in the snow and how did it perform. I currently have the dreaded rwd, lowered from factory and factory front lip on my 300. This past winter was pure horror. Everytime I'd go out onto a busy street(granted the roads were plowed) and saw a ball of snow or chunk of ice on the road I would make my "I'm going to blow my O ring out while sitting on the toilet" face. lol. Then I would hear the thud and get pissed. I can only afford having one car at a time and need it as a dd and definitely do not wanna get stuck in the snow again. I use to have an 04 sti and had no troubles during winter, but is the evo x lower than the 04 sti or same height as stock.

Well, I've heard people here say that the stock Advan tires suck *** in freezing weather w/ or w/o snow. They said that the tires are so sticky, they get hard & somewhat freeze themselves, losing traction.

Yea, the weather here in IL has been the pits. The X seems like a reliable and solid car as a daily driver. I had no problem owning the snow few days ago.

I don't own a X, but my VIII has never given me any problems in the Reno winter and this was my 1st time ever driving in snow (Lived in GA all my life). Just get a good set of tires for the winter and you'll be fine. I can actually only imagine the X would be better than the VIII due to its S-AWC (whatever its called...). Also just don't lower it and you shouldn't have to worry about hitting crap on the roads. If you want to lower it just get coilovers and lower it in the summer and raise it in the winter.

Good to hear that there should be no problems here cause it did look pretty bad a day or two ago. Do you have the aero kit by any chance? if so, do you think it may cause the car to turn into a shovel?

Good call tripper, coilovers do sound good since I was not going to lower it anyways, I just hate having a dd thats low cause sometimes ya forget about it and wind up pulling out of a driveway a little too fast. Just worried that the aero kit may hit crap, but oh well its a car and you just cant baby it all the time. A set of snow tires will definitely be a must by next winter. Once again thanks guys.

Ya i am getting winter tires for mine next winter. I personaly like the Nokian tires. I have had them on my past 2 cars and they are amazing here in the Canadian winters. I believe Nokian are Norwegian so Swedish tire company. They are a little on the pricey side. I got them prices out here in canada and for the 245/40/R18 they are $405.00

If it can survive a canadian winter with snow tires, it could sure as hell survive a winter here in IL. sounds good and yes I have heard plenty of great things about Nokian tires, definitely will be my choice for a winter tire. I've been so sick of this crappy weather and definitely sick and tired of driving a rwd car in the winter, it gets to ya. Just miss the turbo whining and that ear to ear smirk on my face. The 300 srt8 doesnt do the job at all. I guess theres just no other feeling that you get when you take an on ramp head on at 120mph and know you're going to make it

I too live in Canada and drove the X around for a few weeks in freezing temperatures.

On snow by itself the X is fine. I've noticed that the snow mode helps smooth out acceleration from a stop so you don't end up spinning your tires.

Beware, however, of driving on ice. Even at the freezing point these tires are not to be trusted. I had a heart-stopping experience while taking an off-ramp, going downhill and the roads were wet and just starting to freeze.
While coming through the final part of the turn the car started to slide straight at the concrete curb bordering the turn. I dropped a log in my pants but didn't panic. All I did was let off the throttle a hair and turned the steering wheel in a smidge more. Thankfully the car regained grip and started to turn again but I will forever drive slower on icy roads as a result.

It is also great in the rain and on gravel. Ice is the only thing I'd watch out for.

I have been told by a few good sources that Bridgestone Blizzak MZ-03 are the best choice.

Tarmac and gravel modes I already knew about but I guess I forgot the snow mode, nice! Definitely makes it a lot easier for me to pick one up ASAP! Now only if I could get my hands on an extra grand I could finally do it.

I also heard of Blizzak's, but with 4wd and a snow tire, I am sure you can't go wrong with either one.

Evo at stock height +snow tires = unstoppable.

Passing all of the rednecks in the 4-door 4x4 trucks in 5 inches of new snow at 60 mph while they putter along in the plowed lane = priceless.
