After spending $2400 on simple servicing, servicing that a normal person can not do because they require special tools, computers, etc. I eventually sold the headache and bought a Yamaha... the point is, buying the car is one thing, but being able to afford the "lifestyle" that comes along with it is a different story. You can never compare these two very different cars without understanding the baggage it comes along with.

Plus a thousand. For an M3 with ~50K miles, the yearly maintenance costs are $2.5K-$5K, gas and insurance not included. The Evo may be fast, but it's not a thoroughbred. Expensive upkeep is inherent to the breed. If you understand and accept that, by all means consider an M3. But if you're just comparing the price of new Evo and a used M3, be aware that the surface is deceiving.

I just bought my E46 over the Evo X and 08 STI so it should be obvious what I think. And I'm coming from an 06 STI so I've got background with the Evo/STI.

Why I didn't go for the Evo X? (just my opinions mmmk)
In person, the Evo looked cheaper than a $30,000 car. The dash is full, black plastic especially on the passenger side. I realize the interior is an improvement over the previous Evo's, but that's not really saying much. I didn't appreciate the air gills being plastic either. Driving the Evo (over 5 test drives at various places), the engine was way too loud and sounded like it was going to explode cruising in 5th on the freeway. The clutch play is still too long albeit friendlier than the older models'. I didn't want to buy another new car that would depreciate the second I drove off and I didn't care much for the MANY threads/posts on here about various things breaking (that gas pedal one is scary, although of course one of a kind). The gear grinding issues also turned me off.

Why the used M3?
Because it looks better than the Evo and STI, while while providing its own brand of performance. I got a smokin' deal on an 04 with only 12,000 miles on it (not a typo) and basically bought a brand new car for about $20,000 cheaper. The car came with Ipod integration, radar detector, BMW short shifter, rain sensing wipers, heated seats, clear bra and a cargo net.

Are you a rich snob?
I would hope not. I still have mad love for the STI, Evo and many other "non-snobby cars" but the M3 just fits what I want to drive right now. Know what's funny? BMW drivers are called snobbish douchebags but Evo/STI drivers are called @$$hole5. Same result, different language.

M3 if you want to look like a kock jk topgear joke. My buddy has an m3, sweet car, stay away from 03-04 models(a lot of spun bearings). It's a pretty fast car stock, but if you want to supercharge or turbo, be prepared to spend 10k or more. Evo can be in the 11s for a few grand. I do like the e46 m3 styling alot more than the e92 m3, looks more beefy; but it is getting alittle dated compared to an evo's styling.

Test drive both and get which ever floats your boat more.

Try to get your opinions from the BMW M3 forums. Then decide between the two and get what makes you happy
