Quiet exhaust with performance?
Check out the T1R 76S exhaust. It's very quiet, close to stock. It will be out sometime in July. Here is a link to the prototype development thread:

Will you be offering this with a High Flow Cat instead of a test pipe?
in my opinion the requirements for an aftermarket exhaust would be; Significant improvement versus cost, Absolute performance in sound i.e. NO DRONE even with load.
that T1R 76S looks like an exact replicate of the stock setup. at first to me this looked terrible, but then if that is the design that gives the stock sound a nice refinement, AND the design has been improved enough to give significant gains, then count me in.
watching for dyno now....

My GTI has a TB 3" exhaust and I've grown to hate the hell out of it.
I'd love to mod a EVO X. But the ONLY thing that is holding me back is the fact that on turbo cars you almost have to do something to the exhaust.
MY QUESTION: Are dump tubes a good solution? Can the factory ECU handle the quick changes and not run lean/rich/crappy?
what other options are there?
I want to play it safe too, because when someone gets a new exhaust they'll post a review and say "oh it's so great, it's not that loud and barely any drone."
Ya, I would say the exact same thing about my 3" exhaust the first few weeks I had it too. But once you get tired of it it's volume seems to double every time you get in the car.
If someone can please give me an accurate reason as to why perhaps the EVO X won't have a drone, or if there is actually an exhaust that is tuned like a factory exhaust but with higher flow please let me know
Goals of modding would be to put 20k into it all and shoot for a safe and responsive 450hp. So touching the exhaust is going to be inevitable, if i chose to start digging for power.

This is my thoughts on exhausts:
Changing the downpipe has almost no effect on noise level. Why would it?
A test pipe will definitely increase the noise level over a stock cat or high flow cat. Any cat will act like a muffler. In this area, I'd go with a high flow cat.
Intermediate pipe: the stock evo VIII/IX has two resonators and I think the X does too. Each resonator is basically a muffler. Each one you take out will make the car louder.
Muffler: some mufflers are louder than other obviously. I'd say in very general terms, the bigger the can, the quieter it'll be as you can stuff in more filling.
I have a VIII with downpipe and high flow cat, and it's just as quiet as stock. I can floor it everywhere and no one will turn a head. Any Nissan/Infiniti with the VQ35 is louder. A stock S2000 is louder.
I bet with the X, if you get a downpipe, high flow cat, and the Works stealth muffler, it'll be almost as quiet as stock. The stock interemediate pipe flows fairly decently so I'd leave that for last if you feel that the car is still too quiet after changing the previous three items.

X2 can attest to the sound of BR exhaust. Great tone when needed no drone. Very minimal noise level at highway speeds.
If ever Injen makes an exhaust for the X, and it is anything like the one for the VIII, it will be extremely inexpensive and extremely quiet. my car sounds and looks like it has stock exhaust unless i rev it really high.
I've never been annoyed with any droning.

You think the Greddy TiC is loud without the silencer? I Youtubed a couple videos of X's with that exhaust and it was the tamest aftermarket exhaust I heard.
The Youtube clips sound far more sedated than it is in person. It has a deafening drone when decelerating in gear and when the wastegate opens up, you can hear it a mile away.
I despise dump tubes.
The Ultimate Racing cat-back is barely louder than stock. The stock cat does a great job quieting the exhaust. If you look into a catless turbo-back, the car will be loud, unfortunately.
You don't want a dump tube IMO. They aren't loud, they are crack your eardrum-can't even listen for detonation-make your car rattle-break out the windows-call the cops-loud.

interesting how everyone says exhaust are 'close to stock' now.
i have a feeling that if this was a thread about how someone wanted a loud exhaust that all of the exhausts would be 'way louder than stock'
i wish there was a way some numbers could be applied. Just a simple EQ curve from a standard microphone at the steering wheel or something.
i love the dialogue that has been started, but i hate the opinions that get thrown around with no data, which in this case there rarely is i guess. It reminds me of when I go to o'reilly or autozone and the stupid employees tell me what oil is better!!! aaaarrrgggh

OK well i know my injen exhaust for my VIII has a massive muffler that tucks under the rear bumper like the stock unit, and is the ONLY exhaust that sounds stock at idle and medium revs WITHOUT a cat. so if ever they make a similar exhaust for the X i would look into it. at freeway speed i can't hear the exhaust over the road and wind noise at ALL if that's any indication. I've also never had someone identify my exhaust as aftermarket simply from the sound except if i'm above about 5k rpm, at which point it starts sounding like a sportbike. It's really truely a quiet exhaust, with the bonus that it even LOOKS stock.
has the HKS Legamax exhaust been thrown around yet? according to the reviews i read it is pretty quiet and provides 5 whp...the midpipes are coming out soon according to the vendors here...just thought id share
