Quiet exhaust with performance?

My GTI has a TB 3" exhaust and I've grown to hate the hell out of it.

I'd love to mod a EVO X. But the ONLY thing that is holding me back is the fact that on turbo cars you almost have to do something to the exhaust.

MY QUESTION: Are dump tubes a good solution? Can the factory ECU handle the quick changes and not run lean/rich/crappy?

what other options are there?

I want to play it safe too, because when someone gets a new exhaust they'll post a review and say "oh it's so great, it's not that loud and barely any drone."

Ya, I would say the exact same thing about my 3" exhaust the first few weeks I had it too. But once you get tired of it it's volume seems to double every time you get in the car.

If someone can please give me an accurate reason as to why perhaps the EVO X won't have a drone, or if there is actually an exhaust that is tuned like a factory exhaust but with higher flow please let me know

Goals of modding would be to put 20k into it all and shoot for a safe and responsive 450hp. So touching the exhaust is going to be inevitable, if i chose to start digging for power.

Works has a program where you give them your stuck muffler and they give you one where they have nearly completely gutted it for better flow. Im thinking about doing this and pairing it up with a nice B pipe. im like you, i dont want a loud exhaust. They are nice at first, but over the years/months they just get annoying.

thanks for the reply Rguy.

I don't know much about the downpipe on EVOs, but doesn't all the sound still stop at the muffler if it's designed to stop the sound?

the GTI downpipe adds some low sound, but I think the muffler does most of the job, and now that I have a 'high flow' muffler it sounds like I have a rear engine car with absolutely no sound muffled.

thanks for the discussion.

I look at things the same way!! I had the TBE from Buschur with the Magnaflow muffler. It was pretty nice at first, but i got bored with it really quick. I just don't like a loud exhaust. I want to get an upgraded downpipe that dumps and leave the stock catback alone when I pick up an X.

The quieter the better in my book.

I have the Greddy Ti-C with a silencer in and it's practically as silent as stock.

That would be the best option. You will get good gains and have a quiet performance exhaust. Their prices are not that bad either. It will cost more than a AMS and Buschur exhaust, though.

I figured it was some loss but didn't expect anything substantial. The problem is that it's irritatingly loud without it.

Wow, just did a search. I guess I'll go back to the stock exhaust instead. I'm kind of irritated.

Check out the T1R 76S exhaust. It's very quiet, close to stock. It will be out sometime in July. Here is a link to the prototype development thread:
