Premium fuel?
So I was just watching Fox News and they reported that some gas companies are going to stop offering Premium 91/93 octane at various location because since the gas prices fluctuating so much, not many are buying premium. And the reporter actually even said that cars that are suggested to use premium will not feel a difference if they switched over to regular unleaded. Now my question is, how many of you would use regular unleaded if your local gas stations stopped offering it? or would you drive out of your way to fill up with 91/93? Wouldn't there be a chance of detonation and knock for our engines?
Running regular would cause serious damage via severe detonation on an engine designed for premium. Now in case of an emergency you can fill up with regular but it is strictly advised that you don't accelerate aggressively at all, just lightly cruise until you get to a place where premium is available. It is also recommended to try to completely use all of the regular before refilling so as not to dillute the premium fuel if you plan on driving aggressively. I don't think that gas stations would actually do this because it would cause them to lose business even more than they are now. Plus it's unamerican. Nuff said.
Sales on premium fuel are down. But look at it this way. Locally, we have Sunoco 93, BP (Amoco) 93, Shell 93, Texaco 93, and Sheetz and Get-go which I won't use. If BP and Sunoco stop offering 93 then I will exclusively go to Shell as I'm sure many other people will. ( I used to exclusively go to Sunoco when they offered 94.) This means all profit and a big sales boost for Shell, and a virtual monopoly on the 93 market. Do you really think BP and Sunoco will allow the courtesy of giving Shell all the power and sales?
If my car was aftermarket tuned for 93 then clearly there's a need and I'd find a station for that grade. I would be surprised if the ECU was programmed to allow for knock with regular gas, more likely I'd expect to lose some performance. Mitsubishi would hopefully have thought ahead when programming the ECU on a mass market vehicle.
