Here in Quebec you have to pay the GST and PST + 6.1% tax because the car is made in Japan ( not USA-Mexico) WTF the 2 inspections runs about 200$
You have to wait 3 days to have the title cleared from the customs and your all set.

There selling for 40K here so buying at 30K south of the border seems a good idea if the dealer in the USA could maintain the warrnty and I doubt it. Nobody seems to have any experinece with importing a car that is 30K+ $$$ and does'nt even care about the warranty.

Are you counting taxes? A fully loaded MR comes in at $52K MSRP. If all you can find is $60K you aren't looking hard enough.

No PST in Alberta thank god. It was relatively simple bringing in my MR2 from San Diego. I paid for the vehicle (got a recall clearance letter as well) and paid Hansen's ($1800) to pick the car up and deliver to Calgary where they meet you at the bond warehouse where you pay GST, duty, A/C tax, and a bogus highway tax and drive the car home. After all you do is get an out of province inspection done and register the car and then to Crappy Tire to do the federal inspection which is free and a joke.

I simplified it to $3000 when I wrote it down. The breakdown of costs he gave me was $100 for the "air" tax, $137 brokerage at the border, $195 for a form required from the RIV when inspecting the vehicle, $2291 because the vehicle is not made in north america, $60 for the saferety inspection and around $100 for registration and safety. I was able to check most of the costs on the internet and they are accurate. If someone is able to put a more detailed post down about getting the paperwork done I am willing to do it myself but if it takes too much time I can make more than the fee they charge if I spend an extra two days working. Work a weekend or something which would probably take me the same amount of time as figuring this out.

$52,000 is for the premium pkg. You can get the regular one for $47,498.00. Its not that expansive, There`s nothing on the market for 47,000 with awd, and turbo, plus with all the technology. Im getting one, but dont know which one RED VS WHITE!

heres my .02 cents. wait a year and they will depreciate! ok but on the new car topic.
the savings arent that huge. lets say an mr in the states is 38k and canada is 48k.
Now you go by your mr in the states. Dollar is not par right now, you would probably actually pay about 6 or 7 cents difference. which will convert to roughly 40,000.00 dollars. now you gotta get your car home which if coming from florida or cali will be roughly 1500-2000.00. now you are up again. Then at the border pay another 6.1% because the car is made in japan, which is roughly another $2200.00. And there is roughly 500 dollars extra in air, riv, and other ****. By the time you get your 38k car home from the states, it will really be like 45 or 46. And no warranty. i understand there is a savings but right now it isnt as big as you might think.
To the guy in Winnipeg, vickars isnt that far out on their evo 8 rs. i know they want 28k for it, but we never had new evo 8s here back in the day. Yeah they were 30k msrp in the states. DO the math. say they bought the car for 21k which on the forums here would be very reasonable. if the car came from far south it would be a 2k shipping bill, dollar conversion of probably 1500 buck, another 1500.00 duty bill and another 500 at the boarder. that 05 rs is not badly priced.
Compare it to an sti's price up here.
This is just my .02 cents. And There is another evo 8 coming into winnipeg by me!

First off, to claim that the dollar is not par is true, but only a two weeks ago it was, next week it could be again. Secondly, try and find an MR for 48k, there are a few but not many.

However, let's compare the GSR:

You can get a GSR from Southcoast for 30k, the cheapest you will find in Canada is 43k plus GST, so a total of $45,150. To add to this, try and find a GSR with the SSS package in Canada, or the aero kit, that's right, you can't, they're available here (given, you can buy it all individually, the price is astronomical).

Now if I go pick up the car from cali (i live in calgary), it will not cost me $1500-2000, at the most it will cost me $1000, but even that's a bit steep. So we're now at 31k.

With the current exchange rate that puts us at $33,052 CAD total, and $31,986 CAD for the car.

Now add the GST of 5% (all I need to add in Alberta), which is $1,599 CAD, bringing us to a total of $34,651 CAD. Plus the duty of 6.1%, which is $1,951 CAD, and a total of $36,602 CAD. Plus $100 CAD airconditioner tax, plus $204 for the RIV fee, bringing us to a grand total of $36,906 CAD.

That gives us a total savings of 45,150 - 36,906 = $8,244 CAD. That's a savings of 18% over the Canadian price, and you say there isn't much for savings? Well I care to disagree. And as I stated earlier, you can't get the SSS or the aero kit, both of which I would like.

And, you're probably forgetting the Freight, PDI charge which is close to $1600 in Canada and likely included in the US pricing quotes.

What's the slow period for car sales in Canada? Winter? I'm wondering if dealers would be more receptive to haggling during the cold hehe.

Well, I'm not sure that I was. Platinum Mitsubishi, in Calgary, wants 43k +GST for the car out the door.
