I think it might depend on what you classify as defective. Certainly more than 1 in 100 cars from any brand have their transmissions replaced over the first few years. It might work mostly right from the beginning but one part out of spec leads to problems down the road. I could believe 1 in 100 for a first year model of a car. Look at the rear transfer case seal on the first gen DSM's... most of those had to be replaced. And what are most recalls if not a part of the car that has already been released and is then found to be wholly or partially defective?
