Thks both for your help...

Just to confirm...should side 1 be facing the snorkel or side 2 in the pic below?

Sorry..I know this sounded really amateur but I just want to get it right.

Better safe than sorry. Side 1 should be facing the snorkel.

I could open up my box and look at mine, but from a common sense standpoint, the finer media should be closer to the engine and the coarse part of the filter should be for larger bits of leaves and paper or whatever you suck into the airbox.

BTW, the HKS box has 110% Japanese instructions with only the 'HKS' part being the only part in non-asian squiggly pictographics. I have been wondering if the filter was meant to be run dry or if it is supposed to get an oil treatment. I'm sure it is good to go as delivered, but curiosity remains about what the box says about the filter itself.

^^^
Are you saying Side 2 towards snorkel as opposed to Side 1 as mentioned by UFO?

This filter is more interesting than I thought....

I honestly think Side 2 towards snorkel and side 1 towards maf is the way to go (Finer media inward) that is the way most filters (fishtanks, pools, dirt bikes, etc) work. catch large debris with coarse media, catch small microscopic debris with finer media. in that order...

not true...if either side is ok, they should have just designed it with a single layer of the same element..instead of 3 different layers..

If they had just put single layer .. it won't be called 3 layer isn't it ??

So do you scratch your ***** with your left or right hand ?? ..
Does it matter then ?? either way you do it .. you're getting rid of the itch isn't it??

If you want peace of mind .. then on the mushrooms .. it's the coarse filter outside .. fine filter inside
