Sure.. just keep in mind the car isn't made to tow anything and you risk doing damage to various drivetrain components and your suspension.

say you drove 4 passengers about 200lbs each. That's 800lbs of stress on transmission and engine. Can that be equalled out to towing a 430lb motorcycle with trailer and no one in the car?

I am going to say it could easily handle a Class I hitch (which this would be). A Class I hitch can take 200lbs tongue weight and a max load of 2,000lbs. This type of hitch can be put on pretty much anything from Cavaliers, Civics, Sentra's etc (almost every small car). So although it says not to tow, an Evo X can handle everything outlined in a class I hitch. Pretty sure the Evo X has better brakes, suspension, transmission and power than any of the cars I just listed that can take a class I hitch

So towing things like motor/dirt bikes, quad, snowmobile, ski-do, bike rack would be fairly easy.

now I don’t suggest loading up a trailer to the max (2,000lbs) than loading up your car with 4-5 people and heading through the mountains as that is a lot of stress and would be way over what the car is meant for, but taking a trailer with a bike or two and 1-2 people with a bit of camping gear would be more then fine.

If you wanted to tow things, get a small pickup truck. Don't use a sports car.. honestly, that's about as retarded as it gets.. next to the Plymouth Prowler that came with the mini-trailer.

So AMS with their Evo that had a trailer hitch and trailer was as retarded as it gets? And the Corvettes I have seen with little trailers... that is as retarded as it gets? Although the Evo is a sporty car, I hardly would classify it as a "Sports Car"... it’s a hopped up family car from the manufacture… Not a sports car. And some people might not be able to afford another vehicle to be just for towing or don’t see a need when the Evo is plenty fine... Why buy a POS truck when you have a perfectly capable Evo?

Like I said in my previous post… Pretty sure the Evos transmissions, suspension, brakes and engine are a hell of a lot better than 100% of the other vehicles out there that are able to run a class I hitch… As long as it is done within reason, aka no loading up the car with 5 people + a full trunk + a trailer loaded up with 2,000lbs of crap.

And also think about how hard you are on the engine, brakes and entire drive train when these cars hit the track. That is A LOT! Of stress and abuse being put on them and although it is two different things (racing and towing) pretty sure if these cars can take the amount of abuse they take on the track, towing things like dirt bikes, motor bikes, a quad, sea-do’s etc…. are not going to harm it any more.

Yeah, I still think it's retarded. My opinion differs from yours. Trucks are made to tow/haul, not Evo's.

since i have one on my car, i will speak for those of us that have them. i wanted one because i didnt want to tow a trailer with it. the purpose of me aving one is to put a carrier for my tires on the back on track days. I know people have different opinion on this, but you can pull a smalll trailer with if you want. The reason being is that people have a tendency to do stupid stuff and try something that is not designed to do for something else. The manufacturer merely tried to prove a point that you can pull with certain amount of weight. you can see by their pics amount of weight tested on the hitch. This is not for everyone, life s about taking chances. please dont tell me about my warranty and all that. Cuz i got a connection with a dealership to take care of my stuff. so lets not go there. I think that if you buy a car like an evo x and you race it and break then thats a chance you take. if you put a hitch thats also a chance you take. btw yeah ams did this on the evo 8 or 9 i know cuz i have called dan over there about it. I dont want to come off as a jerk but people are not dumb they know what they are getting, if they wat a hitch then so be it, but please dont make us feel dumb. we are smart enough to buy a 40k dollar car. also, it is our money and if warranty doesnt cover it then so be it dats our problem not yours. i just think sometimes here on the forum people take things way out of proportion. lets do a k.i.s.s process lets keep it simple stupid. lastly the bottom line is that there is finally a hitch for evo x.

A friend and were talking last night about setting up ours cars (me: Evo X, him: A4 Quattro) for light use towing e.g. hauling tires and tools to and from the track. I'm not sure why there's a controversy, plenty of people have done this before. If you're not comfortable with doing it yourself, then don't it, simple as that.

And props to JWA for the how-to and writeup.

So sad this thread died. I only have one car, Evo X. I need to drop off my R1 at the dealership to have maintenance done to it. I really would like to get a hitch and a foldup trailer. I have seen one on a VW Golf recently on the freeway towing a Harley. Anyone here got a hitch for their X and have pics they can share?
