20,000 Miles and what I think of my X

So on Sunday I hit 20,000 miles (oddly, changed immediately after pulling up my driveway, which was the same situation for 10k).

Here's a summary of my car:

-Everything's stock.
-I did oil changes about every 5000-6000 miles.
-Have yet to replace tires, brakes, etc.

..Tires: amazingly, the tread on my OE tires look as though they'll do another 5000 miles.

..Brakes: ordering a new set from Girodisc tonight.

..20,000 maintence:
will do some time within the next 30 days.

Yeah so I don't do oil changes as often as most of you guys do (I'd like to but I just can never find time to do so), but we'll see what happens in the long run.

Anyway, the important stuff: how's my car feel?
My brakes...well, they feel weak (but as aforementioned: needs to be replaced). They squeak a lot. And in addition to my brakes squeaking, I'm getting some constant squeaking/squealing from something. I'm guessing it's not coming from the brakes though because it's making noises regardless of me braking or not. Hopefully it's obvious I'm not car-savvy enough to figure this stuff out on my own.

Driving, in general, still as fun as the day I got her, and I still take her up to the Hollywood Hills for a run every now and then.

Shifting gears? Still crunchy. Fluctuating RPM's? Still there.

Any other problems? Yup, at about 15,000 miles, this really annoying thing started happening. Every time I go from a stop (or even from a roll, 1st or 2nd gear), the display between the gauges will change to "CHECK TARMAC!" and alert me with a DING! sound. You can't imagine how annoying this is when it happens EVERY TIME you start moving. On bad days it just makes me really mad at my car. Fortunately though, if I put crazy effort into it (not often), I can avoid being alerted. I know this is an issue that I should take to the dealer, but unfortunately the last time I brought my car in I totally forgot to mention it...(I know right?).

Hmmmmmm...what else? Rattly interior, but I managed to fix most of the rattles by stuffing openings with small strips of insulation (with the help of a small and thin screw driver to push it in).

Well, I think that's it. Of course there are probably some more issues, but hey, if I can't remember 'em, chances are they aren't bothering me too much. So in conclusion: the pros of this car still outweigh the cons, and I don't regret getting this car one bit.

Thanks for reading!

Sounds like my IX. I don't have any weird noises from the drivetrain or engine but I have all the rattles.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Is my commute to work long? Nope, right under 8 miles. Oh and only had this job for 3 months now and was unemployed when I got the X in February.

Is there any way to figure where the sounds are coming from? What are the most common places?

And Vivid, if anything ever comes up you'll be the first to know, thanks!

i hit 23k today
the check thing is for brakes (i believe, i get it too and if you look in the manual under warning lights im pretty sure thats what it says, i know ive looked it up before)

i get the same thing if i happen to accidently tap the brake off a start in 1st, i almost always seem to do it at one stop sign on my way to work, but mine is also happening more frequently. my brakes also feel weak.

Hmm, not sure if I can blame the brakes. But I'll have to see if tapping the brake when I start does anything.

But anyway, nice job hitting 23k!

I'm really surprised your changing brakes already. Especially, since the factory tires still have tread left after 20k of use. This indicated you pretty much used the car fairly mildly. In my IX I'm at 40k still on factory pads and rotors w/ life left.

Yeah it's somewhat an ongoing joke at the dealer about how crazy I am to have gotten 20k out of the stock tires, but the brakes didn't last too long. I suppose I drove decently?...but slammed the brakes a lot.

since I have never heard of this from any other X owner I think this problem is unique to you and is likely a problem in the entire braking system not ur driving.
