Thumbs up Improved fuel economy!

I am amazed by my improved fuel economy! On my most recent highway trip from my place in Indiana to my Dads place in Michigan and back (720.5 mile round trip) I averaged 27 mpg on the way there and 25 mpg on the way home! The only differences between the trip up and the trip back are (of course) the direction of travel, and on the trip home I was hauling about 200 lbs of new rims / tires (my winter set).

When I first got my EVO X I was a bit disappointed by my fuel mileage. On long highway trips I was getting a bit less than 23 mpg. The changes made that improved my fuel economy are:

1. Raised air pressure in tires by 4 psi over the pressure called for in the owners manual for less rolling resistance.
2. Lowered average speed from 10 mph over the speed limit (77.5 mph average) down to the speed limit (67.5 mph average) for less air resistance.
3. Removed Cat and replaced with cat delete pipe to improve engine efficiency.
4. Engine has more miles on it, so perhaps being more broken in effects the fuel economy due to improved efficiency.

I think the first three items on my list probably had the most effect, but I didn’t want to exclude more break in time from possibly having an effect.

Later,

Keith

PS: All fuel economy figures are calculated, not from the fuel economy "guestimator" built into the car.

sweet! 27 is outstanding! Hell 25 is great. I usually get worse mileage on the highway than in the city. My wife does too and she is like WTF? I'll give the tire pressures a try. Also I have an FP Red which doesn't spool up quite as fast as the stock turbo so that helps to stay out of boost when you don't want to. I have no cat and a UR O2 housing/downpipe as well.

hmmmm.

My mpg varies too.

dont know if this helps but just running a greddy ti-c catback, and on eibach springs with same tire pressure.

I live in california and my home is in orange county, I drive about 38 miles to work up north and i guess its a bit of a uphill and then same back down.

Going up I drive a steady 70-75 and get at the end of the trip estimate of 23mpg

Going home I am in no hurry so I go 65 people pass me up all night but I dont care. I average going home at 26 mpg.

THE MOST I ever got out of my evo x going home was babying it at 60 because I was low on fuel and decided to make my night exciting by going home on that tank.

and 28.9 mpg best ever but slowest ever!

i wonder if a intake will help mpg at all like all those ads say?

Most of my mods have increased efficiency and MPG.
In order of me installing them

Cone intake and filter-slight mpg increase
4" racing intercooler- slight mpg increase
ic hard piping- slight increase
3" turbo back exhaust- slight mpg decrease

not sure why the exhasut decreased mileage, but it increased low down torque/hp enough that I can do some wicked donuts on a dry parking lot.
@60mph - 30mpg
@70mph - 24mpg
@80mph- 21mpg
Just need to get ecuflash and start some tuning. Can't wait to see the gains from that.

the direction of the wind is gonna help or hurt milage also...of course youll get worse mileage is you got head winds but if the wind is to your back youll get better mileage gotta remember that

I was typically getting about 24.5mpg cruising on the freeway at about 70-75mph. That was on the 1st factory reflash with a cat-back and drop in. After this past weekend I was ECU Flash tuned and saw 26 mpg on the way home...with occasional WOT runs to try out the new tune.

So I'm guessing I may see possibly 28 mpg if I'm taking it easy.
