How does the Evo X compare to the VIII in SNOW?
I have a 2003 Evo VIII and it's the best car I have ever driven in the snow. I have the AVS Winter tires and they get me through everything!
Those of you who moved from an 8 to a X: How does the X compare to the 8 in snow? If the X is a 10, would you rate the 8 a 9 or 9.5 or what? I can't imagine anything being better in the snow than my car. We're halfway through winter so those of you who've driven both cars should have enough experience to reply.
Those of you pansies who keep your Evos out of the snow can save your "I don't let my Evo see snow" replies for some other thread for people who wear skirts!

not really, the S-AWC should help alot with stability.
there was a video floating around of a yellow VIII fitted with the new s-awc while it was still being developed by mitsu and a few comparison runs between an IX and the modified VIII in the snow. the difference was staggering.

better. Since i got the 04 EVO VIII and now the X. The X is much better in snow.
I have no real stock vs stock comparison. SO my X is not much heavier then my VIII was. Not even a 50 LB probably.

Evo VIII 3263 (05 GSR)
Evo X 3517 (3594 MR)
250ish lbs - I am sure if you drive back to back it might be noticeable. But again, different cars/chassis. 250lbs would be like having a my brother and our hockey bags in the car. For me, I can feel the added weight.

I've noticed a bit of a tendency for the X to understeer if you're not on the throttle at all that I never noticed with the VIII. The S-AWC is really weird at first but the snow setting is nice. I've not gotten anything close to stuck in any deep snow, and when I've been brave enough to gun it in a straight line the car stays in a wonderfully stable, straight line, whereas the back of the VIII (no ACD on mine) would try to squirt out to one side or the other. For those times I've made the back come out, intentionally or otherwise, you can hear and feel the S-AWC trying to correct it. It take some getting used to, but overall the car does a great job correcting itself with minimal input from the driver.
For parking lot fun I'd recommend turning S-AWC off otherwise the computer's going to try and correct any skid you put the car into. Just push and hold the ASC-OFF button for about 3 seconds, until the display shows the sliding car and an exclaimation point. Since I've only made 2 payments on my X, I'm not playing in the snow very much, but next year I probably will.
For day to day driving though, the X is a great, great car in the snow.

Its my understanding that S-AWC is the the S-AYC, S-ABC, and the Stabilty+Traction Control.
Along with the S-AYC sensors and components as well the usual ABS/TSC equipment the SAWC is made of the computer controlled electro-hydrualic clutch pack (ATF resevior located in trunk).
As my S-AWC is not functioning 100% (no yaw correction/AWC control) but i still have traction/stabilty. dont know if thats the same system on this car.
I can tell you with the S-AWC off the car is completely different in the snow. I drive in a couple inches most days or just on ice. Driven in 6" of snow many times with this car. I haven't driven any evos before the 10 though.
It seems to drive more like an STI with it off, with traction control going off more often.
