Could this have damaged my turbo?

Long story short I bought a used 08 Evo X. The previous owner apparently put an aftermarket bov on the car and when he traded it in he installed the stock bypassvalve back on backwarks. So since I have had it ive put about 2000 miles on her with the bypass valve venting incorrectly. Hence thats why I had surging all the time and noticed a power loss like a week after owning the X. I havnt been able to switch the bypassvalve to the correct way yet cause i just saw a pic of the evo x engine bay and realized what was wrong with my set up today and will be doing it tonight. Did I damage my turbo or even my bypassvalve? Or am I in good shape since I didnt have it set up this way for very long.

It's quite possible the thrust bearings have been damaged on the turbo. You should check for shaft motion in and out of the turbo.

What would shaft motion look like? Funny question. Anyway Im a dummy still when it comes to turbos so how would I check for shaft motion on the turbo?

When the car is TOTALLY COLD take the intake off and put your hand inside the turbo (gently, with no rings on your fingers) and feel the end of the shaft. Put two fingers on it and move it from side to side and from front to back and so forth. There should not be excess movement. The shaft spins-and if it has excessive play in any direction, it is just destroying itself.

How likly is it that there is something damaged in your opinion? And what performance related issues would I run into if there was shaft motion? It still runs pretty good, decent power but it just seems like it wants to pull harder but it just cant. I think thats due to the positon the bypassvalve being backwards.

could it have damaged the turbo? yes. did it? likely not-at worst you created an occasional overboost situation that may have marginally shortened the life of your turbo/related parts.

if you felt compressor surging, it is possible that it caused the damage. if you have shaft play on your turbo, it would perform less and last less.

put it the right way and drive it.

Compressor surge can destroy a turbo quite quickly. Considering he has 2k miles on it, i would not be surprised if the thrust bearing is toast. If the shaft moves into and out of the turbo more than ~1mm, it's toast.

I would suggest taking pictures before changing anything!!! you need to have some kind of proof that it was on there backwards

I bought it at this place off Pat Booker rd. Northeast motor company I think. I had also taken it to a dealership to have them look at it before I bought it and they didnt even catch the bypassvalve. Anyway I swtched it to the correct position last night. The compressor surge is gone. Power still feels about the same.

Its not slow but its not real fast either. Maybe this weekend ill check the turbo out.

I probably would not of touched it if you think something might be wrong. I would take it back and make them fix it, that way they are aware of this problem. That way in case something goes wrong in the next 1,000 miles or whatever, it may be blamed on the wrong installation from when you originally bought it.

If you change it, and then go back to them. They can say you are the one that screwed it up. You should take it back to them the way you bought it.

Of course there is a chance nothing is wrong with the turbo, and you can just put the bov back in the correct position. And you could be completely fine.

Bone stock evo working as intended, imo.
