I have a question. When i pop the trunk to my 08 MR the thing only seems to open in the slightest bit and i have to pull the trunk open, and the thing is heavy, not that it's a problem for me but if i'm carrying a bunch of stuff it's just a minor annoyance. Is this normal? I never thought about it until now and i'm wondering if there's something wrong with my hydraulics or anything like that.

 

Normal. It just pops open past the lock - you will need to lift it beyond that.

 

yeah i wish it lifts up all the way automatically too.

It is most likely the same on the X and the IX. My trunk would only pop open with the wing...when I removed the wing it would pop all of the way open.

 

Mine does not pop all the way open with the wing removed. But, it's lighter by ~15 pounds.

 

Wow really? I have an STi with a wingless trunk and unfortunately the winged spring still installed and when it pops open it is violent.

 

yeah i thought it was weird since my 05 evo viii wasn't like this at all. It was a lot lighter to lift it.

 

I thought that too, but after I took a look at it and lifted it up and down I think it's got to do with the air shocks ( not what their called I don't think, but I can't remember the name of them lol ) I don't think that it lets it open up, perhaps some sort of safety feature because the top of the trunk is easily bent.

 

Without the wing it's pretty balanced. Either the inside lever or the key button just unlatches it. Then, when you lift it a little bit it will swing open by itself, but in a controlled damped fashion.
