I was bored this morning driving to work so i thought i'd see where 70 was in third gear, ~6400 rpms. I thought 7k plus sounded high, but it would make since then that 2nd gear would be well over 8k at 70 lol.

How you could do this is mind boggling. There should have been enough engine braking to damn near lock your tires up shifting into 2nd at that speed, especially if you were dumb enough to let it out to 9K after already mis-shifting. Honestly, you should get the MR if you're going to be this careless. It's completely unsafe for the people around you, and as you stated, it's not like it's your first time. Sorry man, but when you pull your car out of third after a mis-shift, it goes into NEUTRAL until you figure out what the hell you're doing.

Change your oil and look for any metal. Then do a compression and leakdown test.

You could've bent a valve.
Do this /\, and then when your shifting, practice shifting smoothly, learn to down shift properly and still be perfectly smooth. As your shifts improve so will the quickness of them.

I really don't think your in the red, if the car was affected by the 9 rpm jab it wouldn't have made it much further down the road... I'd imagine the car would have been smoking, your temp gauge would have been rather high and oil would be in your radiator. I seen someone mention you probably wouldn't see 250k miles, I highly doubt any of our Evo's will see 250k! I truly believe your alright and stay off the gas/clutch pedal Collin Mcrae and I think you'll be OK (Just Playing)!

P.S. I've miss shifted before and I also had an automatic Mustang I accidental shifted into 2nd instead of drive and was going well over 70 in second, oh boy did that car not enjoy that!

Everything is fine. Compression test was a perfect 150psi all cylinders. Ill be changing the oil today. Ill look for carnage but ill say itll be clean.

Changed oil. Looks normal. Didnt find any fragments, none stuck to the bolt and couldnt find any with a magnet. Gonna check around town to see who can do a leakdown test.

Well after talking to my tuner and a mechanic they said its really no point in doing a leakdown test if my compression test was 150 all cylinders. So in the clear for now. Well see later on if a failure is on the verge. Ill keep ya updated. But so far this engine can take some harsh abuse.

It is my first time going into the wrong gear Evo 8 was a gear lock out and was a overrev to 8k in neutral. Im not even sure if i went into 2nd all i know is i saw the rev hit between 8-9k. It happen so fast I can only assume two things: went into 2nd gear (as underhood shifting bushings are known for grabbing 2nd gear in the evos, im not the only one thats noticed this also. Drive a 8, 9 or X around with underhood bushings and barely push the shiftknob down from 1st gear and itll instantly fly into 2nd gear and lock in) or mishifted and overreved in neutral. Im going to say it was a neutral overrev as i didnt break anything. It woudnt be careless for driving manuals for 9 years and only problems ive ever run into are with evo's trannys and only had one shifting incident in the evo 8 and one in the evo x in my life of driving manuals. I have a clean record, no accident, no tickets. This wasnt me flying down a highway dodging cars doing 100 for the hell of it. It was on a open country road with no cars doing some testing of the new tune fix to see if any cels would pop up on wot.

Evo transmissions are super picky, the worst of any manual I've ever driven!

I had a CRX with a ZC engine years ago. I was doing about 80 and downshifted from 5th to 2cd - my tires locked up and I saw my life flash before my eyes. No damage was done except to my ego but my point is I can't believe yours didn't do the same thing.

My RPM's were off the tach so I don't know how high they went, lol.

I've seen fwd and rwd lock up from that, but i think awd are much better vs lockup situations. Not going to test it though

Dead on, zwinger. Some info for people wondering- A leakdown test is done to isolate where compression is being lost. We hook it up and can isolate intake or exhaust valves being the culprit. I even found a bad rebuild with ring gaps aligned on one cylinder of a 300zx. This is a great piece of equipment.

Ya rule of thumb bring your car in for a leakdown test its less expensive that way, and they have the tools to listen for anything, unless you wanna unload the doh for a compressor. Usually you just start with compression test , figured what cylinder then leakdown to find the exact area of leak. But wont help me find out a spun rod or what not usually car will smoke, not start, bad id;e or oil pressure drop or jumpin all over, but i didnt bend a valve or cook one atleast. Not hearing any bangs or such.
