i find that you guys are really lucky with having such cold conditions.

it makes learning car control REALLY easy/safe when there is ice/snow... because you don't need much speed to get unstuck...

here in Aus we need a lot of rain + speed to get sideways in an evo - so it's pretty dangerous todo so...

Go find a big empty car park, put some cones down and learn:
a) what makes the car go sideways
b) how to recover

The problem with your situation was lack of experience, if you don't instinctively know what to do when you are out of control how do you expect to get back?

ps - sorry to hear about your car

Sorry to hear about your car bro.
No offence but it was probably lack of experience. I live in New England and since I was 16 no matter what kind of car i had, i would go out driving in the snow. Its a great way to learn car control.
Im 32 now and I still do it every chance I get. I even bring my wife out so she can learn how to control a car in an emergency.
Hope you get it fixed quick.

Throttle control and steering input is absolutely critical in any kind of slide. Letting off the throttle or putting it in neutral makes your front wheels plow while the back end rotates around. I would recommend taking a driving course, as well as seeking out your local autocross group and get into an event. You'd be amazed at how much you will learn about how your car handles at the brink of control, and how to bring it back into control when you lose it.

Good luck, at least you weren't hurt, and even more importantly - you didn't hurt anyone.

While I agree that the most likely cause for the accident was "driver error" the issue of wet traction should not be underestimated. Specifically, in the summer tire catagory ( a la Tirerack) an Ultra performance tire, like the OEM Advan A13c, has, in general, better wet traction than an Extreme performance tire. That said, the wet traction performance can overlap for some tire brands i.e., a Ultra performance tire can have a lower test result than an Extreme performance tire. In addition, this can also be true down to AS season Ultra performance tires. The point here is when choosing a "summer tire" or DD tire, do not just look at dry traction or the performance catagory (Ultra, Extreme, AS, Maximum, etc.) but also the test results for wet traction as well for you may not be getting the best tire for those less than optimal conditions, like heavy rain, when the likelihood of loosing control of your vehicle is high.

Later, Ken

Guess what, your not alone. I live in Chicago and I wrecked my WW Evo X on a damn Lawn boulder going at 10-15mph on iced road. I clipped my front right corner and broke $450 oil cooler, aero kit lip, cracked bumper, scratched fog light, and bend lower steering arm. All from a damn 10-15mph skid into a boulder at a 10-20 degree angle. I blamed this on the stupid summer tires that came with the car. On the same day I was going to get my All Season tires installed at Costco but that rock hit accident had to happen right in the morning to work. Now that I have my All Seasons on I never lost control of my car again in rain or snow. Hell even I drove in heavy rain at 80 mph just fine changing lanes.

yeah I noticed all seasons are the way to go regardless. The car has so much more grip in snow or wet its not even funny. The stock tires are made to post good lap times and lateral grip, doesn't matter if you got 8 wheel drive if its on race tires like the car comes from the factory, it will spin in the snow, and hard.

Driver error

Thanks for all the replies guys, gals. I came to realize that indeed it was my fault driver error also lack of experience. But i will learn and live. I went to get her appraised today it came out around 2500K. The only thing im mostly worried is how will the paint look/match. But i have no choice i have to put her under the knife to get her fixed. As far as the driving lesson/autocross i strongly will consider this for this summer, hopefully chicagoland has these things around. Thanks again for all the replies. Ill post pictures so atleast you guys can see how she looks.

If u go to a good bodyshop/paintshop, they have a tool they put on the paint thats currently on your car and scan it (amount of paint/use/dialation/etcc) and based on the good paint on the portion of your car that doesn't need repair, they will mix the exact same color for your in a special paint mixer machine. Paint should be the elast of your worries if you do go into a good place, but the fit and finish.
