Quote: Hey, not that I am going down this road but VW R is something to consider: AWD manual, 4cyl, turbo (one speed shop achieved 358bhp and >300ft lbs torque),should much lighter than EVO and will sell in ball park of EVO and STI. Just something to think about...for me the poor visibility in my car is getting to me! Perhaps getting rid of dumbo-ears side mirrors will help.

Its direct injection, the mod ceiling will be low. Ken, if you knocked on me for getting a 135i, you'd be singing BMW praises all night compared to an unreliable Volkswagen. Plus US cars automatic only? Flush. You'd regret that. Badly. A better interior and rocking stereo is all that car has going for it.

Seth, I believe they offer a 6 spd manual as well as optional auto. Not going there myself for a number of reasons but as I indicated above a speedy shop got >300hp out of the four banger and similar torque...not to shabby along with a modified suspension and a new AWD drive system that can redistribute 100% to rear wheels if necessary...I think VW/Audi is seriously trying to cut into this segment with the R.

Edit: Here is the VW Golf R modified as per article; bhp at 400 and for this style about the best one can do.

It looks like it needs race gas to get the full 400HP. My issue with the power is that direct injection cars have a level they can go to, and then there is no more, because the fuel system is much harder to upgrade, and parts availability is lacking. This was the issue with the turbo BMW sixes, Mazdaspeed 3/6, as well as the turbo GM Ecotec.

But I just think of VW/Audi as cars that eat BMW and Porsche exhaust. Reliability is suspect, and even if it can handle more power, it'll never have the racing pedigree of an Evo, nor the handling, braking, or overall feel. The original GTI was great for its time in the eighties, but I think VW has lost their way as far as performance cars go. You'd be kicking yourself after three months, or the first time you do a HPDE with it.

There's only one car I'd trade my X for, it'd be a 1974 Ford Falcon XB GT Mad Max replica! 600 HP at the rear wheels! That would be the ONLY car I'd trade my X for!!!

i was thinking about keeping it for at least 3-5 years... but i think getting to 30 i need a grown up car. c63amg , m3, 335i , s4 etc in a couple of years.
I like my evo but i really can't stand how people judge me and link my car to my personality.

Why is everyone on this forum talking about trading up to a car that is 3 or 4 times the price of an EVO X? I was under the assumption that the majority of people on this forum bought the EVO X because they could not afford the GT3, RS4, e92 M3, etc....?

my reasoning is because the Evo X ismy dream car, and the only way i would trade it in is if i could get a GT3, which i can't thus meaning i will NOT trade my X in......Jeez can we dream just for a lil bit before someone goes tryin to shoot it down
