Took a spin outside today with my summer tires on and it was not as bad as I expected. Pulled out of my snowed in parking spot without a problem, drove right over the plowed snow bank. The roads were wet from the salting but the back roads need some work. Driving at 10mph and trying to come to a complete stop at a stop sign on the back roads the ABS goes wild with icy slush under the tires. Very slippery, but on wet it was fine no problems. Good thing the temperature was about 40 and the sun was starting to work it's magic. But forget it if I you need to come to a stop quickly or drive home late in the day.

I drove in one snow storm on the stock Advans, it did surprisingly well.

Since then I put a set of BFG all seasons on and have had no problems at all.
In my opinion you do not need to get snow tires to be able to get around in the snow.

i drove around in snow with the advans before. if you're really careful you can get around... but not very fast.. but kinda fun.

otherwise get some wintersports, or blizzaks, or if you're thinking lots of snow... nokian hakkas... and suddenly you'll want to be a rally driver.

I found out the hard way that all-season Advans are not that great is snow and ice over a mtn pass. I hit a patch of ice going 35mph and my screen went from orange to yellow to green (no traction) I was in snow mode when this happend. The rear end slid out, and I thought I was headed for the cement barrier. As soon as I took my foot off the gas and gently counter steered, the rear end came back in line and I was on my way. With proper snow tires, this probably would not have happend.

You won't be able to control it in any snow and ice on the stock advans. I didn't even make it up my little slope of a driveway one year when I was coming home from school. You can spend 500ish bucks on a set of new decent snow tires and it will be 100 times better than the stock tires. Plus, with how expensive those tires are, you don't want to ruin them by gouging and running them in those freezing cold temps. Shelf the advans, pick up a set of the general altamaxes, or blizzaks and you will be able to drive in ANYTHING mother nature can throw at you. Hell, I am on a set of Dunlops that aren't even made for deep snow and I've been making it around in over a half foot of snow and no plowed roads for four days and counting.... EVO AWD FTW!!!

Cheers

i have a set of kuhmo asx all seasons on my 8. they do alright in the snow, got almost an inch the other day and had no issues what so ever, but had a set of blizzaks on my old 1g dsm a few years back and they did so much better. i bought a used set of stock wheels for cheap and put my all seasons on those and have my star specs on my other set. generally roll the all seasons year round unless im headed to the track or wanna go out and play. ordering a set of blizzaks for the evo first week of the year. got my own skis, and an evo, one of the few years in my life ive been praying for snow... bring it.

but how was the snow on the road? fresh? slushy? compact? icy? or do you actually mean you plowed through 14" of fresh snow?

The snow was freshly fallen on an untraveled road. The snow was coming over the hood at times. I had to pull over to clear the grill once and then once after I was out of the higher snow. No damage done what so ever. I was purely amazed, I was certain I was going to get stuck but it didn't even come close.

I think it is important to mention the fact that you must know how to drive on SNOW... You can slapp on the most top rated winter tires and such on to the EVO but if you don't know your car well enough or the environment, it will be disastrous. Snow tires are a must for winter, but if this is your first EVO, you must know how it behaves in the snow and know how to maneuver under certain circumstances... It's the same principle, if you have someone who just learned how to drive stick and have them to drive your EVO... Careful out there friends!!!!!!!! and
Merry xmas!

I'm running stock size Pirelli Winter 240 Sottozero tires and even in the worst storm it's almost like driving on dry roads. We had a city crippling snow/ice storm that was so bad that people couldn't get up even minor inclines. There were cars parked all over the sides of city streets where people just couldn't go anywhere. I did my normal treck home passing hundreds of cars not moving and stuck and only once did the traction control indicator go on. It was pretty scary going up this one steep hill. Not because the EVO was losing grip but some pickup trucks and SUV's were spinning sideways making it hard to get around them. If you are properly equipped the only time you will ever have with these cars is ground clearance in very deep snow.

is evo gonna handle better than fwd cars? such as accord, civic..
and is it definitely gonna be better than rwd bmw 3 sereis, s2000?
by the way aboe cars i mentioned, i used to own them.
hopefully evo falls between those 2 groups.
thanks.
I have the conti DWS and the thing acts like its dry pavement!! Even braking is absolutely awesome!!

Hey guys, successfully made my long snowy trip in the stock advans! took me eight and a half hours to get from lancaster PA to northern nj. ended up takin it real slow, didnt want to get into an accident or anything, so i never exceeded 28 mph (nobody else really was either, conditions were horrible!!!!!). The car did just fine, but it would have definitely done better if i had had snow tires. There were a few hair-raising moments along the way, but the evo got me there safe and sound. Not that i'll be attempting such madness again any time soon...

400 bucks (plus install plus tax plus shipping) was hardly a large investment for me for LM-25s, especially since switching between snows and summers doubles the life of the tires (since you use them half as often).

+1 mealion! If you haven't ever, make sure you go screw around in an empty parking lot for a little, just to get a feel of how the car behaves. I've been "pulled over" for doing this a few times and gotten out of it every time by saying I was testing my new car/new tires/etc out for snow/severe weather driving. That could just be an understanding Utah cop thing though... I took my gf to screw around in her Mini and explained how the DSC system worked and how she should drive. 10 minutes of practice and learning makes a huge difference.
