Insideline Modified Evo X vs GT-R track battle!

(Hoping this is not a double post...)

I have been waiting a long time for this article! They tried to build an Evo GSR that was still comfortable for DD but could also take it to a stock GT-R at the Streets of Willow.

They should have had REAL professionals drive the car instead of senior editors.

i like how they did the test - it's like a REAL street Evo for your REAL better-than-average driver. Either way I'm sure the results would have been very similar, pretty much negligible between the two cars.

You can sift through all the posts to find all the steps they took. They did it in a bunch of steps with every part, not all at once.

Final power mods IIRC: AEM intake, AMS IC piping and FMIC, Garrett GT3076R drop-in, AMS widemouth, Cosworth cams, either stock or high flow cat, AMS dual exhaust. Uncorrected, 388 on RRE dynapack on 91 oct, corrected was ~420 IIRC. There's a link in the text to the dyno.

I seem to recall another magazine test where a pro-IRL driver was only able to do a 1:31-1:32 in a stock Evo X at the same track. So the driving was not lacking.

Senior editors of car magazines may not be "professional" but I doubt they have a lack of driving skills. I'm sure most of them are as good as your precious Ryan Gates.

Anyway, cool find, I'm sure most of us already knew that though. Any idea on handling (and other non-power) mods?

well it prolly cost them $10-15k to upgrade the evo, BUT it is still not even close to what a brand new gtr costs, so the gtr is worthless in my opinion. too much money

I do agree they are indeed skilled but to stand up for our friend i have met very very few people at this level. The kid is quite remarkable to watch.

I do think for this test though the staff did a good job.

Does anyone else disagree with their performance mods? Doesn't that Garret turbo have issues? Where are the FMIC / piping specs? AEM intake? Seems odd for a higher performance car. I feel they could have done a lot of other things differently. I have been losing respect for RRE slowly... but that could just be personal beef I have with them.

I guess if all you care about is how the cars perform on a track that doesn't have many high speed areas... Sure. I can name a whole bunch of cars that would be worthless in that case.

the evo did well. I think the staff did well. It would not have been fair if they were to use professional drivers this time around. It would make their original times useless.

Very true. I just don't like it when they put complete n00bs in the driver seat (like they did with the CTS-R race). The guy that drove the evo had never been on a track in his life.

There's certainly a lot of different routes to go with modding. Seems Garrett has fixed the issue? Only issue I was aware of was the wastegate arm failing.

The original intake was AMS, but they put on the AEM because it's CARB legal. You can dig up all the info in the link I posted earlier.
