(maybe) dumb question bout MR's
In that case, you probably will not like the SST. It is a great transmission, especially when set in full manual super sport mode. Before picking up a GSR, my wife and I were told that driving the MR would make anyone, that was use to driving a manual, drive an automatic. After having experienced both transmissions, I have to say that I like the SST, but feel that it took away from my driving experience in an EVO.
I kinda feel the opposite as gr8dc2db does... I felt it enhanced my driving experience. I felt I could concentrate on more things "Evo" -- The handling, braking, and acceleration. It's all perspective though.
It is funny how people keep saying Sport Auto Tranny are " duh not a sport car because it auto shift or whatever ". Lot of peoples on that forum probably never tried the SST.
I'm myself a " WTF?! auto?! hell no! " Until I tested VW and Audi DSG... and had the chance to tried once elite sport tranny like Maserati and new porsche 7 speed.
The only concern I still have is how good the SST will handle and take whp.
Also how hard is it to work on it for an average joe ( especially when you import car where there is no good mech to work on it.
Time will tell, but I really hope we will see more aftermarket parts for the SST tranny. sOOn!
But if I could afford another Evo X, it will be surely with the SST.

just to offer another opinion... my last many cars (2 AE86's, 240sx, Corvette Z06, S2000, ...) have all been clutches. i do like my mr, but honestly, i wouldn't get the mr if i didn't have one ae86, and the s2000 as well in my current garage. i've driven it for 2 months, and i am fairly certain i wouldn't be able to stand having it as my only car. if i could only have 1, it MUST have a clutch pedal.
driving the mr just isn't the same. it's fast--shifts better than i could ever until the day i mod my body with bioengineered actuators, ha ha. but, that said, it's boring. unless if all you care about is the absolute best track times, or are one of those types that complain about manuals in traffic (i never do--love it), then........ the choice would be obvious to me.
so bottom line: you keeping a manual?, then go for it. only car?--don't get sst.

Without having test driven, this is almost exactly how i feel. I will never take this car to a track. I want a good fun daily driver that i can enjoy having and every time i see it in the driveway i just say D@mn that is my car. I love driving stick, and love everything about it, i feel that the MR might just not give me the feeling of driving a stick and just be more like an automatic. Anyways only a test drive will tell.

+1. My wife surprised me with a GSR over an MR (she wanted the MR more that I did). She knew that I liked to upshift and downshift with a manual that utilized a clutch and shifted from the floor. She made the call for the GSR, and I enjoy the car every time I drive it. You will not be dissapointed.
Don't listen to those who say you can get all the MR options on a GSR. It simply isn't true. There are SO MANY differences between the top of the line GSR, and the MR.
I think the SST is something that grows on you. From the start it was a bit strange, the off the line slowness is still a bit weird, but I would NEVER trade it for a GSR. I should also mention that I hate automatics, and I hate the way the SST auto shifts when being driven aggressively. I drive it in manual mode 95% of the time. The other 5% is the convenience of an automatic.

Oh yea... and the MR's BBS rims are super nice for OEM rims... it's just a damn shame Mitsu had to ruin them with clamp on weights too... I'll never understand why they put clamp on weights on $600 BBS rims...

i would still like to see the changes to the 2011 STI before i make a decision, but i am going to just call a dealership and ask if i can get all the options on the GSR. I like the idea of having my clutch. If they change the STI to look a tad more aggressive, it is going to be a hard decision. Thanks for all the input guys this has turned into a very informative thread.
The SST is a love hate thing. You either get people who would sacrifice their first born for it, or you get people who hate it with a passion. There's very little middle ground for most.
I test drove a few MRs before buying my GSR, and while it's clearly best-of-breed for a dual clutch, I couldn't shake my initial fears of mod-ability. FWIW, cost wise, it's a wash; the SSP clutches and coolers are basically the same cost as the GSR's clutch and pin upgrades/fixes, so it's not like "omg SST is expensive compared to a 5 speed!"

If you're truly a manual transmission guy and absolutely have to have one to be happy driving your car, be careful and really think long-term when test-driving the MR (or any dual-clutch auto tranny). I can almost guarantee after the test-drive that you'll walk away saying "wow, that transmission is pretty sweet, I didn't think I would like it, but I do, I don't think I'll miss my clutch pedal." It's a damn good transmission...almost video game like in a sense.
But, after about 2-3 months you'll likely be saying "the novelty of the transmission really wore off, now I'm not really sure about this, I miss having my clutch pedal."
At that point, it's too late. Just something to think about. Take it from someone who had that exact scenario happen
