I dunno the deal with auto shops in Canada, but here in the US, at some shops like Advance Auto Parts, they let you borrow the scan tool for free at the stores. Why exactly is it that you have deemed it necessary to buy one? Just asking out of curiosity.

Your link is just an OBD II reader. It's not a scanner tool. It's to be about $150+ for a good scanner tool.

its not free here in canada to get it scan if you have engine light.
i got an engine light the other day. the only mod that i have is hks drop in filter and ti-c catback. before it threw engine light its really snowing that night and slippery and im pressing my gas to make the car slips on the snow. and when i arrive home park it over some snow on the driveway(cause tired from and no time to shovel) the next day when i start the engine it threw an engine light. after my work and started the engine there still an engine light. so going home just drive the car 100km/h on the hi-way. the next day when i start the car no more engine light.

so i was thinking of buying the obd reader/scan tool so i can check by my self or fix it before bring it to the dealer.

That is a basic one that will read the code, display it, allow you to erase it which will turn off your service engine light... if thats all you want it for it will work. I have a similar priced/functioning one called pocket scan

If you just want to be able to read codes and delete them, you can find a scanner that is much less expensive.

Yeah, this is the case here in CO, but I've found out recently that in CA it's no longer allowed.

This exact model works fine on my Evo X. The key is to ensure it has CAN support. The only thing it doesn't tell you if what the code means (e.g. P1238). You have to reference a paper manual for common codes, or look it up online afterwards. Not a big deal imo, and useful for those occasions when you need to read codes or even check I/M readiness for an emissions test.

Carplugs Scanner

Hi,

Check out this little low price obd2 CAN scan tool.

I've scanned several kinds of cars with it and I had no bugs with it.

I can tell you that I have a cheap code reader that I bought, and it works great on my truck, but does not work on the Evo...
