help start moving :(
it was a diff experience driving my evo after coming frmo a 6 speed rsx, with the evo, u just simply gotta know where the engagement point is approximately and lift up to that point and as u feel it catching and u begin to move, give it gas...itll become alot smoother as u get the hang of it and get to konw the car better..hope this helps
Stevo don't sweat it man. This car is harder to drive from stop and go than any other manual car I have driven. Go again and drive the car in an empty road or very low traffic. On a parking lot try this:
On flat even ground start the car now don't touch the gas what so ever, just use the clutch pedal let it release or depress as slow as possible. Play with this because you should be able to get the car going at idle speed engaged in first gear. The car should not stall or jerk much at all if you can master the pedal movement.
.In simple terms find empty lot. Flat ground shift into first gear release clutch slowly no hurry and if it jerks a little its fine (happens to me if I am distracted). Car should move slowly like automatic in drive at idle speed creeping. Master this and you mastered the clutch.
If you master this starting will be a problem no more.
NOTE: I drive without shoes of any kind and this since my first car. Try no shoes driving because you will feel the clutch a lot more.

id like to thank YShen15118 for helping me out with the great tip of revving a bit then letting the clutch slip for a second or two at the biting point instead of the full motion with the clutch!

Hey OP I learned how to drive stick on the evo x. The first 3k miles was hell for me but i'm at 5k now and i can drive it through sf traffic with no problem. It's a hard car to learn but once you get a feel of when the clutch bites it gets pretty easy. Depress the clutch to the point where it engage, and try to blip the throttle to get moving blip it again and again to get a feel of how much gas you need to get it moving watch the rpm and see at what rpm the car moves then release the clutch and softly step on the gas, try not to rev the car over 2k. Try to practice this so you can get used to the feel of the clutch and throttle control.
Once you get good at getting it off first gear find a hill, you might have to rev the car more when your in a hill. Also try practicing with car around so you can get use to it. I know when i first learned i felt so pressure not to stall with cars around and whenever i feel that, that's when i stall. But like i said man it's frustrating at first, don't let anyone discourage you. Now i'm to a point where I can drive this car through bay bridge traffic with no sweat. Practice, practice practice!

i begin to release the clutch from asap my foot touches the gas. I get to about to 1.5-2k rpm and as I bite I hold the clutch for a second and apply more gas while slowly releasing the clutch. Is that an OK technique or should I always get to the bite first then add gas?
Also how do I go about making a quicker go from a stop say... onto a busy highway. If i rev it to 3k and drop the clutch, the car shocks and gets real jumpy and moves slow? Thanks for the continuing tips!

The correct way to do it is to lift until it starts to grab, hold it and then give it gas before releasing. You need to learn the point where it starts to grab, by practicing in an empty parking lot and lifting until the car starts to sputter like it's going to stall, then push back in and trying to lift to just below that point.
You should be able to engage the clutch without giving it gas, and not stalling the car. If it sputters and dies you are releasing it too fast, and if it rolls back then you are not engaging to the bite point.
Soon enough you will get the hang of it

DON'T drop the clutch dude. you need to practice a bit. go to a parking lot or something, or non bussy roads.
as far as taking off, i taught my sister during winter when the RPMs would stay high (in an older vehicle). all i told her was to let off the clutch and the car would go. it gave her the idea and she kinda went with it i guess...
wow, whats with these guys buying an AWD EVO as their first manual car? i remember being scared in my 1.6 celica st back in the day (although i was 16)....can't imagine being a noob with power!
seriously, practice with someone that knows how to drive manual. they might give you tips that help when they wathc you drive. for some reason i have the tendency to engage as low as possible and a friend of mine told me to gas it more and it seemed to help me out.

YOu want to get to a point where you can put gas the same time the clutch bites. Don't ever dump the clutch or rev over 2k, or you will be buying a new clutch. If you really want to take off quick, just drive regularly but depress the clutch to it's engagement point and step on the gas once you feel the car moving let go of the clutch and stump on the throttle.
Just curious, how long you've been driving stick? I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I never understood why people have trouble moving from one manual trans to another, it's all the same to me. Take a quick minute to figure out the engaging point, then I'm good to go. Just keep at it, you'll figure it out sooner or later.
he should have started on a POS 1989 ranger like i did!!! not an EVO! like i said, get a friend who knows how to drive, let them teach you.
by the way i loved that ranger, i'd rock out to my dad's lenard skynard and grateful dead tapes!!!

There's a difference between a first car and first manual car. I'm 25 years old and i've been driving automatic since i was 20, I jump on the evo x because I didn't have friends that drive manual and I had to self learn. It's all about discipline and knowing your limits, i drove this car like i was driving a civic dx when i was learning because i know that i can't handle the power at the time.
