Potential New Owner - Questions About iPhone, Trunk, Tires

Hello,

My name is Brandon and I'm considering the purchase of a new MR Touring with nav and I have a few questions. First, let me say thanks for all the great info I've learned so far! I registered a couple weeks ago and have been madly reading posts to learn as much as I can about the car and I must say you all have made me very excited about the car.

My first question is about iPhone connectivity. With the factory Bluetooth and/or nav system, can you stream music wirelessly from your iPhone to the stereo system? All the posts I found on the subject were from mid to late last year and the answer was no. Have there been any firmware updates or anything else that would enable this? If not, how are the wired connectivity options? Does the cable charge your iPhone and allow you to control it through the nav system, or is it just a simple aux connection?

Second, I've been reading that the trunk is a little small. I like to play golf, so is it big enough to carry a set of golf clubs or two? And do either of the rear seats fold down or is there a ski pass through to help open things up?

Finally, how are the stock tires in the snow? I live in an area with fairly mild winters, but we always get a couple weeks of snow each year and I'm wondering if the stock tires with the AWD system will be good enough to get through or if I should set aside some money for a set of snow tires/wheels?

I look forward to your answers and thanks again for all the great info! It's nice to know there is such an active community for an awesome car like this...

Brandon

Welcome

Don't know anything regarding your first question, but for the second two...

Yes, 1 set of clubs will fit in the trunk. A second set MAY fit depending on how big your bags are. There's always the back seat, I guess. I recommend taking your clubs to a dealer and seeing if they'll let you throw them in the back to make sure. There is no pass-through. The windshield washer fluid and battery are back there, and the structural bracing crosses in the middle, so there's no room for it. The seats do not fold down.

The stock tires will NOT work in the snow. Not even a light dusting. There have been at least a few crashes posted on here with light snow cover and stock tires. You will need snow, or at least all-season, tires to go along with the summer tires it comes with. Whether you put them on different wheels or not is up to you.

Nope, no updates and no streaming from the iphone through BT. There is no true connection yet so all music is through the headphone jack, which means no charging either.

I have longer clubs than normal as well as have the sub from the SSS package and I have to put my clubs in the back seat.

I bought my car Dec 31'st here in Denver and drove with the stock tires in snow and ice. It wasnt smart but it wasnt horrible. Just be careful and its ok. I would highly recommend snow tires however if you are in an area with snowy winters.

Yup I have the SSS too and I cant fit my clubs in the trunk :/

I tried driving in the snow last winter with stock tires and it didnt work out at all. I got stuck a few times. I bought a second set of stock wheels and im putting a good set of winter tires on them for the winter. Its a good investment.

Driving an Evo through the snow with stock tires is just plain stupid and dangerous to yourself and others around you.

I learned that after one day in the snow.

No fold down seats or pass through.

Stock tires are very dangerous in the snow. If it is just starting to fall, no biggie, but the next day, look out. Turning and stopping.....won't happen.

Good luck on your decision and welcome to the forums....

Welcome.

I can only fit one set of golf clubs in the trunk. My snowboard has to lie awkwardly diagonal in the backseat, and the surfboards have to go on the roof.

All season tires (at a minimum) are a MUST in the snow. If you don't get them, you'll quickly realize this.

One golf back definitely fits (although even this is slightly difficult), and a second will possibly fit if you put the driver and 3-wood in the back seat, if both of the bags are the slimmer/lighter style.

Also, I had some scary moments during our freak snowstorms over the winter, but I would say that the Evo in Snow mode on stock tires is probably as capable as most cars on the road on stock tires. That being said, it's not terribly smart due to the soft compound, and with a set of dedicated snows (all seasons = a compromise all year), you'll be unstoppable.

I don't know about that. We got a light dusting early in the season last year before I switched to my winter tires. Civic with awful all-seasons made it into my garage just fine... Evo slept in the street until the salt melted the truly tiny amount of snow.
