Mild Mods questions

First Evo: few questions:

This is my first turbo car, and after driving it a bit I now realize why everyone goes turbo. ITS ADDICTIVE!! So anyway to make this short and sweet I just had a few questions on mods: (I want to get everything at once so I can just get 1 tune.) Goals are Mid 300 ish AWHP and I am not partial to any one vendor or company as far as aftermarket parts go. I look for reliability, and a trust worthy company. Also, looking to stay pretty much stock without major modification. Anyway here goes.

1. Drop-in air filter ( I’m assuming K&N is the way to go here, as I have only used K&N on all my other vehicles) Don’t really want to go with a full blown intake setup.
2. TBE (I don’t want it to be loud. In fact I like the stock exhaust, but I know with more power, u need to have the ability to make the car breathe more efficiently. So basically im looking for an exhaust that goes to be quite. Stock quite. While at the same time give me some good feedback on a tune.)
3. I don’t know if it would be beneficial at all to get a bigger intercooler, or more efficient one?
4. I will be tuned by Boomba in IL.
So basically my main questions here are:

1. Would you add anything to this list?
2. What else would I be doing to hit mid 300ish AWHP?
3. Any feedback would be great. Thank you.

1. I would opt for a Perrin or AFE drop-in rather than the K&N.
2. check out the Magnaflow catback, it's going to be one of the quieter on the market. Any cheap testpipe such as the Megan will be fine.
3. An aftermarket intercooler would be beneficial, even on a lightly modded X.
4. What are your plans for boost control? My recomendation is a MBC.
5. You should pickup a Cobb or Perrin turbo inlet tube to go along with that drop-in air filter.

Is there any reason to avoid the K&N? I just dropped one in this weekend and the cars feels fine however if it isn't any good I'll grab a different one.

Yes, i did want to do a boost controller.

Also are any guages neccessary? I would like to do mechanical ones rather then electrical.

Im thinking boost, AF, and fuel guages.. Any feedback on those.

thank you for your responses so far.

Go easy on the oil next time you clean the filter.. there have been several reported issues of the filter oil screwing up the MAF sensor - though in all fairness, there were also people that had MAF sensor issues with non-oiled and even stock air filters as well.

You dont need a MBC on these cars. Just get a good tune after you mod. Boost and A/F are the best two gauges to start with. As far as hitting mid 300 AWHP it depends on the dyno. I hit 350 AWHP and 390 TQ with intake, test pipe, CBE, E85 and Tune on GST's dyno.

plus an 02 downpipe? I still can't find a real answer to the question if a 02 dp or partial dp makes any difference. I come from Subarus where the DP was a no brainer and very easy to install.

A Perrin drop in filter with there intake tube, would be a good route. Far as an exhaust is concerned the Buschur Racing stainless steel 3in exh with quiet muffler... https://secure.buschurracing.com/cat...5512ec40d98869. Any test pipe would be fine check out http://www.speedcircuit.net/ they have good prices.

A front mount intercooler would defiantly be beneficial, and an upper intercooler pipe wouldn't be a bad idea either. As far as an 02 down pipe you don't need to change that out to hit your desired amount of awhp! Hope that helps!

so here is the on going list so far:

1. Drop in Filter (Check)
2. Greddy SE Cat back (Check... sounds close to stock) <- Is it really worth it though, besides sound at WOT, does a cat-back really make a difference?
3. FMIC with LICP and UICP ( thinking of AMS for that... Check)
4. Does a down pipe do much? worth the cost? (AMS)
5. Good tune.
