exhaust smell inside car

Was driving to work. Its raining. Car is stock and not tuned. I had the defrost/ blow on feet selected and I picked 75 degrees about a quarter way up for the fan. I get this distinct exhausted smell inside the cabin. We all know that smell when we just turn the car on. I have been driving for fifteen mins and it was warmed up. I was following a car on the freeway but all my windows were closed due to the rain. So it smells really bad like exhaust inside for a good 8 minutes.. I turn the fan off and crack the window. A few mins later the smell goes away. Still not a good sign of such a strong Smell right? Park at work and idle.... no smell. Thoughts?

I'd say to check all your gaskets involving the exhaust manifold, turbo, and full exhaust itself. As the car heats up over time, the gaskets can expand a little bit and close up that leak if there is one. I had a similar problem with an old 98 GSX that I had with my exhaust manifold gasket. As it heated up the gap got smaller and less noticeable but still needed to be replaced. Definitely check all the gaskets you can access.

could it possibly be the car infront of you making all that stink and your car sucking in all that stink? when you have the heat on there is no option for the recirculate button so its new air coming from outside all the time.
just a guess.

sounds really excessive for a relatively new car...

^^^ This. Now try sitting behind a car with no cat and your heat going. Makes me want to strangle someone.

use the in car air circulation as opposed to sucking air from the outside till you fix your issue.

Heat allows recirc, defrost or any combi of defrost does not. Run recirc and turn on the A/C in heavy traffic. You can have A/C with the temp on hot. Won't fog the windows and no stinky smell from all the cars around you. Problem solved.

Make sure you have taken a shower and are wearing a clean pair of underpanties. If the smell continues, you probably have a leak somewhere between the gas tank to the fuel rail. If the car is running really rich, you will also smell gas.
