I agree with heavyD. The SST transmission is just as much of the car as anything else. It's part of what makes it an Evo. The fact that they gave them the SST kinda scared me because it's heavier than the GSR and has other options in the car that help weigh it down. It does shift faster though. Regardless, unless there is some special advanatge to having a higher model of the STI that is shown faster than the lower model STI, then I see no argument whether they had a higher priced option STI to test.

I have taken a course at o Neil rally school and it is fantastic. I love that o Neil preferred the set; they said it was faster and they liked the paddle shifters so they could keep their hands on the wheel for better handling.

Lovethat the sst evo was proven nationally on a head to head contest!

Also it's not Mitsubishi's fault that Subaru doesn't have an available dual clutch transmission with the STI.

Subaru has been pretty happy making $$$$ by selling the same car since 04 over and over to Subie fanboys. They add a new front end, fender flare, or spoiler and walla; new STI and Subie owners gladly trade in their current STI for the new one despite it being essentially the same car. I'm not blaming Subaru because they know they can easily pull the wool over the eyes of their fans and buyers but if you really want fair the 2011 STI should be compared to a 2006 IX as they are at the same level of technology.
It's more about the SST being on a rally course as both your hands are on the steering wheel and paddle shifting rather than clutch->shift->gas. The driver with a stick shift would have more stress as he has to clutch, shift, steer, and left foot brake and could lose some times. The SST however, is very easy to drive on a rally course like this because all the shifting is in your fingers. Because the driver doesn't have to clutch, he can focus on the course better than the stick shift guy.

Even then, I'm just going to guess and say the GSR will still be 1 sec faster than the STi on the same course.

A dual clutch/SST tranny, or paddle shift even, will be faster than a manual in any performance setting. There's a why every top level of motorsports uses paddle shifters where allowed. Not having to take your hands off the wheel will make you faster.

A lot of Subie guys are just hard headed. For me, I'll drive whatever car is better, and that happens to be the Evo out of the two Never in my life did I see myself getting a Mitsu, but performance is performance. No arguing that. Though... the Subie guys try for some reason....

lol all these articles makes me want to go and get an SE... they only have two in black left around my area going for 29 and 30k each (new)

but we're one-two more years away from a new Evo so I'm still undecided

Road & Track Article = Evo SE Owns STi

Motor Trend Article = Evo SE Owns STi

Car and Driver Lightning Lap = Evo SE 3 seconds faster then STi at their test track.

do I pull the plug? do I wait? oh decisions!

depends what you want from a car. For DD i think the STi is still better if you like MT, if not then SE.
Also all gloves off as soon as you thinking about upgrade. SO the Magazine test are strictly for bone stock cars. Even tires can make a change on that. Dont hang too much on the magazine results between these two.

If comes down for me the DD and light track use MR hands down /with minor mods and tune. Everything above is base GSR territory.

yeah sometimes I stop and think "you know what, screw these magazines... I don't think I really want to buy another car with the same tranny... I already have a TC-SST and I know its limitations... I want a 5spd GSR..." hehe

I wouldn't mind having an STi... but I would only as a second car... I'm madly biased towards the Evo, always been... besides, at my age I really don't give a crap about comfort lol... my wife's '11 Eclipse GS-Sport is mad comfortable already, enough for those days when we want to go out and cruise and take it easy and slow (slow... yes pun intended lol for that Eclipse cow )
