That's a protective coating of some oil that's on the engine when it's delivered. It burns off. Had the issue on my 03 Evo VIII and Evo X. It's nothing to worry about.

Or you burnt up your clutch.

I just bought a new X and I have the same smell. I only have 1200 miles on it, so I'm guessing its normal haha.

It's kind of funny... but strange and slightly annoying at the same time. Hopefully after 2 months of daily driving it will go away?

Usually strange smells are an indication something is amiss. It's hard to remind myself that this is all "normal" LOL. Especially considering I popped 2 motors in my VIII.

Knock on wood! Glad to see I'm not the only one in this boat.

Op, do us a favor: lift your rear seat and check if there is scorching marks on the foam on the passenger side.

I had a 2010 GTS for a while before this. Drove it off the lot with 12 miles on it. No smell. So it's not a "Lancer" thing.

Acctually it is, I bought mine with 3 miles on it and it smells rank sometimes. I have just over 1,600 miles on it. I was told its just some of the glue that was oversprayed, can anyone confirm that?

I had the same smell for about 1-1.5k miles on my SE. Whenever I would come to a stop, I would smell it. I just assumed it was the clutches breaking-in (got the car with 10 miles on it). I have about 2500 miles on it now, and now the smell doesn't occur anymore.

Nope. Everything's fine. Except now my backseats don't lock as securely.

*** Gave it a little more OOMPH and they locked back down ***

Mine smells like that too, but it's because a plastic bag flew under my car and stuck to the cat... Damn litterers!!!
