I love having a 5 speed.

I tend to keep my cars for a long time and it will be easier (in terms of cost) to replace a clutch than an auto-trans.

But for me, Id rather drive a manual trans slower and have more fun and a better experience then to just basically turn a wheel and let the car do the work for you

Not trying to get into MR/GSR war, but my 2 cents...

I think saying people get an MR because they dont want a stick is inaccurate. I think its the opposite. I think people get a stick because that is all they want. They are hardcore about it. Not saying their wrong, its just what they want. No one is hardcore about not having a stick, and if you are, you are probably arent reading this. If someone doesn't care, they will get whatever performs best(ie faster).

There are plenty reasons why people chose both Transmissions(cost, modding, driver experience). Lets just not say the MR is for the wimps that cant shift, because the the truth is the only reason people still shift gears is because they want to.

This is the truth!!! I live out in a rural area where it is nothing but flatlands and cows and chickens...I love driving a manual out there but if I was back home in Philly then I'd rather have a MR.

the reason why i wanted this transmission, is after having done some research. i found out that getrag purchaced a bunch of techology from borg warner who does the trans in the gtr. i wish you could use the paddles to get in to reverse.like the borg warner one. living in a city with a million people and 1/3 of those are cracker jack box licence holders i'm happy to cruse along in stop and go traffic for an hour or so at a time. in auto mode. I do mostly drive it in SSManual it feels the best in that mode.

ps i also wish that the shift knob wasn't so high... and if they were going to put it that high.. they may as well have made it like a rally sequential and made it about 6" taller.

last night i was following a X GSR on side streets, he had to break in the curves probably because he wasn't down-shifting. In my MR i had my foot on the gas because she shifts herself.
now imagine how driving in the curve felt in the GSR because he had his foot on the brake and I still had my foot on the gas.
unless you always correctly downshift in the GSR, the MR ride in the curves will feel better because she's always in the perfect gear.
the MR in Sport D always stays in the sweet spot ready to explode.
dont get me wrong because I love regular shifting too, its just so much easier in the MR.

when i bought my car.. my buddy teased me about not being able to drive and thus why i got an evo mr rather than a subaru STI.. he claimed that if you know how to drive the subaru will be faster. lol what was funny is i said Yep thats right i dont know how to drive.. but that being said he never track's his car. and my first event with my evo is this weekend! lol i'm pumped to start learning and eventually when he does come to the track i'll prove him wrong by lapping him (hopefully)

If you DD it and you are getting pissed off/stressed out cause of stop and go traffic, or constant stoplight action, then a 3-4k penalty is nothing if it means you can live with your car far more on a daily basis.

If thats not an issue, i don't see any value in going from GSR to MR besides maybe making it spouse- friendly

Pretty much covered it. The only reason is to use the SST rather than shifting your own gears. Like others have said, GSR is so much more fun to drive.

I dont know about more fun, different yes...

The SST really lets you concentrate on driving lines, which is what the Japanese engineers intended...

If you gotta think to shift while racing ... your doing it wrong. Driving line is quite simple, what isnt simple is throttle control and fighting for space in a turn. I just personally dont like the lack of servicability of SST. The whole unit has to be replaced when it gets broken? thats just dum.

I'll give you the easiest answer I can:
If its going to be an un-tuned/light tuned daily then MR.
If its going to be a dyno wh@r3 then GSR
Road course MR.
Any other racing MR. (could be argued tho)
If you are willing to pay more to upgrade further (if you didn't follow my first advice) MR

Drive both then just pick one, they are both Evos and you're good either way. (But I wouldn't buy a used MR over 17k miles or so, even that's a lil high).

Ask yourself these before committing on the MR:

1) With respect to modifications, are you comfortable with the MR gearbox's limitations? (let's not talk about modifying the gearbox because TCU limitations will be here to stay for sometime)

2) Are you prepared for the higher transmission maintenance costs involved with the MR? (again, let's talk OEM maintenance costs using SSTF and OEM filter)

3) Are you comfortable with the OEM MR reverse BEEP. (which means no aftermarket reverse sensors unless you want 2 beeps irritating the hell out of you whenever you go into reverse)

4) Are you comfortable with the OEM MR's reverse speed? (try it, you'll know what i mean. too slow for my taste, throttle up and it goes too fast. With the 5MT, reverse speed can be half clutched to my liking)

I owned and drove a GSR for 38 months. Did about 102000km on it before swapping it for a used MR.

Stock to stock, the MR definitely feels faster due to the transmission doing the shifting work for you. You will lose some of the shift engagement involved in driving manual cars but the speed at which the MR shifts will make up for it. :P
